Every year, students who sat the KCSE apply through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, KUCCPS, for government sponsored places in universities, national polytechnics, technical training institutes and teacher and medical training colleges. Getting the application right can decide which course you study and where. This guide explains how to log in, how to check what you qualify for, how to choose courses wisely and the mistakes that cost students their preferred programme.

Who Applies Through KUCCPS

  • KCSE candidates of the latest exam year who want government sponsored places.
  • Candidates from previous years who did not get placed or want to apply again, depending on the rules for that cycle.
  • Students seeking degree, diploma, certificate and artisan programmes in public and approved private institutions.

What You Need

  • Your KCSE index number and year of examination.
  • Your password for the portal, which for first time users is usually based on details such as your birth certificate or ID number as set out in KUCCPS instructions.
  • Your KCSE results slip, to check subject grades and cluster requirements.
  • Money for the application fee where it applies, paid through the official channel on the portal.

Step by Step: Applying

  1. Open the official KUCCPS student portal and log in with your index number, KCSE year and password.
  2. Confirm your personal details and update your phone number and email.
  3. Pay the application fee if it applies to your cycle, using the payment option on the portal. If payment does not show, see our guide on KUCCPS payment not reflecting.
  4. Go to the programmes section and search by course, institution or cluster.
  5. Use the qualify check to see which programmes your grades meet the minimum requirements for.
  6. Select your choices in order of preference, within the limits set for each level.
  7. Review everything carefully and submit before the deadline.
  8. Download or screenshot the confirmation for your records.

How to Choose Courses Wisely

Meet the minimum and the cluster. Every degree has minimum subject requirements and a cluster weight calculated from specific subjects. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place, because competition sets the actual cut-off.

Check previous cut-offs. Our KUCCPS cut-off points page shows how competitive programmes were in the last cycle. If your cluster weight is well below last year’s cut-off for a course, add safer options.

Mix competitive and realistic choices. Put your dream course first, but include programmes where your points are comfortably above recent cut-offs.

Consider diploma routes. A diploma in a related field can lead to a degree later, often with credit transfer.

Think about careers. Research what jobs graduates of each course get. Browse real job adverts on JobinKenya to see which skills employers want.

Understanding Cluster Weights

For degree programmes, KUCCPS calculates a cluster weight from your grades in the subjects relevant to that cluster, combined with your overall performance. Two students with the same mean grade can have very different cluster weights for the same course, depending on how they did in the key subjects. The portal shows your cluster weights once you log in. Compare them with previous cut-offs, not just your mean grade, when deciding which courses are realistic.

Common Mistakes

  • Choosing only highly competitive courses and ending up unplaced.
  • Ignoring subject requirements, such as a minimum grade in Mathematics or English.
  • Waiting until the last day, when the portal is slow.
  • Letting a cyber cafe operator choose courses for you without checking.
  • Not saving the confirmation.

If you use a cyber cafe, sit with the operator, read each choice before it is saved and keep your password private afterwards.

After You Apply

KUCCPS runs placement after the deadline and publishes results on the portal. If you are not placed or want to change, a revision window usually opens. Our guides to checking placement results and revising choices explain both. Learn the full process in how KUCCPS placement works. For funding, apply to the Higher Education Financing portal once placed.
