Updated 29 October 2026
Updated October 2026. Money market fund vs fixed deposit in Kenya: a fixed deposit locks your money at a bank for an agreed term at an agreed rate and is insured by KDIC up to KSh 500,000; a money market fund (MMF) lets you add or withdraw at any time but its yield moves daily and it has no deposit insurance. If you know exactly when you’ll need the money and the bank’s offer is competitive, a fixed deposit gives certainty. If you want flexibility, an MMF usually wins.

Rates: why there’s no single fixed deposit rate
Banks set fixed deposit rates privately, often by negotiation, and larger amounts usually get better rates. They tend to move with the Central Bank Rate, which CBK set at 8.75% on 7 October 2026, and with Treasury bill yields (the 91-day bill was 8.748% on 26 October 2026). Ask at least three banks for a written quote for your amount and term before deciding, and compare it with the latest MMF yields on our rates tracker. We don’t list bank fixed deposit rates because most banks don’t publish them.
When a fixed deposit makes sense
- You have a known date for the money (for example school fees due in six months) and won’t need it before.
- Your bank offers a rate at or above what MMFs are paying after fees.
- You value KDIC cover: KDIC’s site confirms fixed deposit accounts are covered, up to KSh 500,000 per depositor per member bank, combined across all your accounts there.
- You expect interest rates to fall, so locking today’s rate protects you.
When an MMF makes sense
- You may need the money at short notice, as with an emergency fund.
- You save small amounts regularly; most MMFs accept small top-ups by M-Pesa.
- You expect rates to rise, since MMF yields follow the market up.
- You want to start with a low minimum. See minimums for each fund on our list of 59 CMA-approved MMFs.
Worked example
Illustration only: KSh 200,000 for 12 months. If a bank quotes 9% fixed, you earn KSh 18,000 before tax and KSh 15,300 after 15% withholding tax, guaranteed if you don’t break the deposit. In an MMF averaging 10.3% for the year, you’d earn about KSh 20,600 before tax and KSh 17,510 after, but that average could turn out lower if rates fall. Project your own figures with our MMF calculator.
Other options to compare
Treasury bills sit between the two: a fixed return for 91, 182 or 364 days, backed by the government. See MMF vs Treasury bills and how to buy Treasury bills. For long-term options read the best investments in Kenya.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better, a money market fund or a fixed deposit?
A fixed deposit gives a guaranteed rate and KDIC cover but locks your money; an MMF is flexible but its yield changes and it is not insured.
Are fixed deposits insured in Kenya?
Yes. KDIC insures fixed deposit accounts at member banks up to KSh 500,000 per depositor per bank.
Can I withdraw a fixed deposit early?
Usually yes, but the bank may cut or cancel the interest. Check the terms before you sign.
Is interest on fixed deposits and MMFs taxed the same?
Yes. Residents pay 15% withholding tax on both.
