Fintiba vs Expatrio is the first choice most Kenyan students make after a German admission letter, because the German Embassy in Nairobi needs proof that you can cover your living costs. Short answer: both providers block the same government amount (€992 a month, so €11,904 for a 12-month visa), but Expatrio is cheaper on fees (€119 set-up plus €9 a month) than Fintiba (€159 set-up plus €9.90 a month for accounts opened from 3 November 2025). Over 12 months Expatrio costs about €51 (roughly KSh 7,400) less. Updated November 2026.

How much money must a Kenyan student block for Germany in 2026?
The standard blocked amount is €992 per month. Expatrio explains that the figure is tied to the BAföG student support rates (§§ 13 and 13a of the Federal Training Assistance Act). For a normal 12-month student visa that is €11,904, about KSh 1.72 million at today’s rate. If your visa is for 18 months, you block 18 x €992, which is €17,856.
People going on a job-seeker visa or the Opportunity Card must block more: Expatrio lists €1,091 per month for those visas (about KSh 158,000 a month). If you are weighing that route, read our guide to the Germany Opportunity Card for Kenyans.
The blocked account is only one way to prove funds. A formal declaration of commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung) from someone in Germany, or a recognised scholarship, can also work. Our wider guide on proof of funds for a student visa from Kenya compares Germany with the UK and Canada.
Fintiba vs Expatrio fees over 12 months
Here is the fee-only cost of a typical 12-month student account. The blocked €11,904 is your own money and comes back to you in monthly payouts once you are in Germany.
| Cost | Fintiba | Expatrio |
|---|---|---|
| Set-up | €159 | €119 |
| 12 monthly fees | €118.80 | €108 |
| Total fees | €277.80 (about KSh 40,231) | €227 (about KSh 32,874) |
| Difference | Expatrio is about €50.80 (about KSh 7,357) cheaper over 12 months | |
Fintiba says accounts opened before 3 November 2025 stay on its old prices (€89 plus €4.90 a month), so older reviews and YouTube videos quoting those numbers are out of date. New accounts and re-openings pay the new fees.
How to open a blocked account from Kenya, step by step
- Get your admission or acceptance letter first. You will need it for the visa appointment, not usually to open the account, but there is no point blocking money before you have a place.
- Register online with one provider. Both are fully online and need your passport. Pick the number of months the embassy expects (usually 12).
- Send the money. Transfer the required amount from your Kenyan bank account. Expatrio says international transfers usually take 3 to 5 business days and sometimes up to 14 days. Ask your bank what it charges for an outgoing SWIFT transfer and make sure the fees do not reduce the amount that arrives.
- Download the blocking confirmation. This is the document you upload or take to your visa appointment.
- Activate payouts in Germany. After you arrive and register your address, you connect a German current account and receive one monthly payout. Expatrio bundles a free German bank account; Fintiba deducts its monthly fee from payouts once you link your account.
Which is better for Kenyan students?
- Choose Expatrio if cost is your main concern, you want to pay in Kenyan shillings through Flywire, or you want a bundled German account and health-insurance offers.
- Choose Fintiba if your university or a friend already uses it and you prefer its process, or if you need a clear 24-month option. Expect to pay about €51 more over a year.
- Either way, confirm on the German Embassy Nairobi website which blocked-account providers it currently accepts before you send money.
Watch for agents who offer to “hold” your blocked amount for you. The money should go straight from your account to the provider in your own name.
