What a KCB personal loan costs: worked example

Here is a KSh 500,000 unsecured loan over 36 months on a reducing balance, at KCB’s lowest, average and highest published personal rates. Fees, insurance and excise duty come on top.

Rate Monthly instalment (KSh) Total interest over 3 years (KSh)

Other costs on a KCB loan

  • Credit life insurance: on mortgages KCB lists 0.34% a year of the amount advanced for a single borrower, plus 0.18% a year for each additional joint borrower.
  • Appraisal or arrangement fees, legal fees and valuation for secured loans. Ask for the full Total Cost of Credit (TCC) statement, which banks must give you before you sign.
  • Excise duty on loan fees charged by banks.

How KCB compares with other banks

On the same portal, Absa Bank Kenya’s average personal rate was 17.08% and NCBA’s 17.30% (updated early October 2026), both above KCB’s 15.54%. For the full ranking see best banks for personal loans in Kenya. If you prefer to borrow against savings, compare Sacco loan rates, which are often lower for members.

How to get a lower KCB loan rate

  1. Route your salary through KCB for at least 3 months before you apply.
  2. Check your CRB status first and clear any listing.
  3. Offer security (title or logbook) if you have it; secured loans price lower than unsecured ones.
  4. Ask the branch for the TCC statement and compare it with two other banks before signing.
