How to Check What ChatGPT Says About Your Brand in Kenya

To check what ChatGPT says about your brand, Kenyan companies can run a short, repeatable test: write down 10 to 20 questions your customers really ask, put the same questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews, and record each answer with the date, the sources cited and any wrong facts. Repeat the same test every month. This guide shows how to do that yourself for free, what to look for, and how to fix what the assistants get wrong.

Why check what ChatGPT says about your brand?

Customers now ask AI assistants questions such as “which bank in Kenya has the cheapest personal loan” or “what are Sacco X’s loan charges”. If the answer quotes an old interest rate, a closed branch or a competitor’s product, you lose the customer before they reach your website. A brand check tells you whether you are named at all, whether the facts are right, and which websites the assistant relied on.

Step 1: List the questions your customers ask

Start with real questions, not slogans. Good sources are your customer care logs, WhatsApp and social media messages, Google Search Console queries and the “People also ask” box on Google.

  • Brand questions: “What is [company] customer care number?”, “Is [company] licensed by CBK/CMA/SASRA?”
  • Product questions: “What is the interest rate on [company] personal loan?”, “What are [company] transaction charges?”
  • Comparison questions: “[company] vs [competitor]”, “best [product] in Kenya”.
  • Problem questions: “How to reverse a transaction with [company]”, “[company] app not working”.

Step 2: Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the same way every time

Answers change with wording, location, login and whether web search is on. To keep the test fair:

  1. Use the exact same wording each month and save it in a spreadsheet.
  2. In ChatGPT, run each question once with search turned on and once without, because the two modes draw on different information.
  3. In Perplexity, note every source link it shows.
  4. On Google, search from Kenya and note whether an AI Overview appears and which pages it links.
  5. Use a logged-out or fresh browser session where you can, so your own history does not shape the result.

Step 3: Record and score each answer

A simple sheet with these columns is enough:

ColumnWhat to write
Date and toole.g. 31 Oct 2026, ChatGPT (search on)
QuestionExact wording used
Named?Yes / named with wrong facts / not named
Who was named insteadCompetitors mentioned
Wrong or old factsRate, fee, contact, product name, etc.
Sources citedLinks shown by the assistant

The “sources cited” column is the most useful. Assistants repeat what they read, so a wrong fact usually traces back to one outdated web page, directory listing or news story.

Step 4: Check that AI tools can read your website

Open yourdomain.co.ke/robots.txt. If it blocks crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot (used for ChatGPT search, per OpenAI’s crawler documentation), PerplexityBot or Googlebot, those tools may not see your current pages. Firewalls and CDN bot settings can block them too. Also check that rates and fees appear as plain text on the page, not only inside PDFs, images or tabs that need a click.

Google says its AI features rely on the same ranking systems as normal search, so standard SEO still applies (Google Search Central: AI features and your website). Our GEO guide for Kenyan businesses covers this in more detail.

Step 5: Fix wrong answers at the source

  • Update your own pages first. Put current rates, fees, contacts and product names on a dated page, with the answer in the first sentence under each heading.
  • Make your company details match everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, regulator lists, LinkedIn and directories.
  • Correct third-party pages that the assistants cite, by contacting the publisher with your official document.
  • Add structured data (Organization, FAQ, Product or Service schema) so machines read your details correctly.
  • Publish answers to the questions you found in Step 1, such as a clear fees page or FAQ.

Avoid shortcuts such as fake reviews or paid links; they break platform rules and can be removed. Changes take time to show, so re-run the same questions after a month rather than daily.

Should you do it yourself or hire help?

A small business can run this check in an afternoon with the steps above. Banks, Saccos, insurers and other firms with many products may prefer an outside audit. Several Nairobi agencies now offer AI-visibility checks; compare what they test, how often, and whether they show every answer with dates. When choosing, use the same questions as in our checklist for choosing an SEO agency in Kenya. Business Radar also offers AI-visibility audits and sponsored explainers, and our guide to sponsored content in Kenya explains how labelled content works.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to check what ChatGPT says about my business?

Yes. You can ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google yourself at no cost. Paid tools and agencies mainly save time and track many questions over months.

Can I ask OpenAI to correct wrong information about my company?

The most reliable fix is to correct the web pages the assistant cites and publish accurate information on your own site. ChatGPT also has a feedback button on each answer you can use to report errors.

How often should a Kenyan company check?

Monthly is enough for most firms, and after any rate, fee or product change.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from showing my site?

Not exactly. OpenAI lists GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) as separate crawlers. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what can keep your pages out of ChatGPT search answers.
