Missed Lipa Mdogo Mdogo Payment? Lock, CRB, Repossession

Updated 1 November 2026

If you miss a Lipa Mdogo Mdogo payment, the first thing that usually happens is that the device stops working: M-KOPA’s Kenyan terms let it deactivate the phone until you are up to date, and Watu’s boda loan terms let it repossess the motorbike if arrears are not cleared. A missed payment can also be reported to a credit reference bureau (CRB) after you are notified. This guide sets out, provider by provider, what the published terms say happens after a missed Lipa Mdogo Mdogo payment and how to limit the damage.

Updated November 2026. Based on M-KOPA Kenya’s terms of service and Watu Credit’s Summarised General Terms (Kenya), both read on 1 November 2026, and the CRB Regulations, 2020. Your own signed agreement is what binds you; check it.

What happens after a missed Lipa Mdogo Mdogo payment: quick view

Stage M-KOPA (phones, appliances) Watu Credit (motorbikes, three-wheelers)
When you are in default When you fall behind on a credit payment When you fail to pay a weekly instalment on its due date
First consequence Product can be deactivated until you are current again; may need more than one payment to unblock Relationship officers contact you by phone, SMS or visit to agree a plan
Credit reporting Payment history reported to CRBs; you are notified before negative reporting Not described in the summary sheet; check your loan agreement
Bigger step Whole loan can be declared due; collections agency may be engaged; agreement can be terminated Vehicle can be repossessed if you don’t respond or don’t keep commitments
Getting it back Device works again once account is current 7 calendar days after repossession to pay arrears; KSh 5,000 collection charge added
Worst case Agreement terminated Vehicle sold at market value; you may be sued, or your guarantor pursued, for any shortfall

M-KOPA: deactivation first, then CRB

M-KOPA’s terms say that if you fail to keep current on your credit payments, M-KOPA, acting as servicer for the credit provider, “may deactivate Your Product” until you are current again, and that this “could require the payment of more than one Credit Payment in order to unblock Your Account.” If you took an additional product (for example a second phone or a cash loan) and miss a payment on it, M-KOPA may deactivate both products, even one you have fully paid for.

On credit reporting, M-KOPA says it reports your payment history to credit bureaus, will notify you before negatively reporting, and will keep reporting negative history until you are current. If the default continues, the terms allow M-KOPA to declare the whole outstanding loan and interest immediately due, use an external collections agency, seek reasonable costs and terminate the agreement.

The terms also say a dispute about the product does not let you withhold payments. If the phone is faulty, report it under the warranty rather than stopping payment.

Watu: from calls to repossession

Watu Credit’s summary for Kenya says you are in default if you miss a weekly instalment or any amount on its due date. Its officers will contact you to make a plan. If you don’t respond or don’t keep the plan, Watu “may repossess the Vehicle”. After repossession you get a final seven calendar days to pay the missed amounts. Pay within that time and the vehicle is released, but a KSh 5,000 collection charge is added to your loan account. If you don’t, the agreement ends and the vehicle is sold at market value. If the sale raises more than you owe, you get the difference; if it raises less, Watu can sue you or your guarantor for the balance.

Watu Simu phone customers should read their own phone agreement, which our Watu Simu guide covers.

The CRB rules that protect you

Under the CRB Regulations, 2020, a lender must notify you at least 30 days before submitting negative information, and loans of KSh 1,000 or less cannot be negatively listed. Our Lipa Mdogo Mdogo CRB guide explains how listings work and how to clear one, and the CRB Kenya hub shows how to check your status.

What to do after a missed Lipa Mdogo Mdogo payment

  1. Check the exact arrears. M-KOPA: in the app. Watu: dial *876# from your registered number.
  2. Call the provider before they call you. Watu’s summary says officers will agree a “make-up plan”; it is better to propose one yourself.
  3. Pay only through official channels. M-KOPA accepts only Paybill 333222 or its app and no cash; Watu accepts M-Pesa to its Paybill and no cash. Anyone may pay on your behalf, including a guarantor.
  4. Don’t borrow from a loan app to cover it unless you have priced it. Compare costs in Fuliza charges first.
  5. Keep the SMS confirmations in case of a dispute.
  6. Report harassment. If collectors threaten you or contact your friends, see how to report to ODPC and CBK.

Frequently asked questions

Will M-KOPA lock my phone if I miss one payment?

It can. M-KOPA’s terms allow it to deactivate the product when you fall behind and keep it off until you are current, which may need more than one payment.

How long does Watu give you after repossessing a motorbike?

Seven calendar days. If you pay the missed amounts in that time the vehicle is released, with a KSh 5,000 collection charge added to your loan.

Can I be listed on CRB for a missed instalment?

Yes, after notice. M-KOPA says it notifies you before negative reporting, and the CRB Regulations require at least 30 days’ notice and bar listing for KSh 1,000 or less.

Can someone else pay my Lipa Mdogo Mdogo for me?

Yes. Both M-KOPA and Watu accept payments from third parties into your account, but the payer gets no rights over the product.
