Watu Simu: Phones, Requirements, Deposit and How to Pay

Watu Simu: Phones, Requirements, Deposit and How to Pay

Updated 28 October 2026

Watu Simu is Watu Credit’s phone financing plan: you walk into an authorised Watu Simu dealer with your original national ID, pay a small down payment, and leave with a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet that you pay off in daily or weekly M-Pesa instalments. To qualify you must be 18 or older, have a Safaricom line registered for M-Pesa and active for at least six months, give a reachable next of kin, and have no other active Watu loan. Watu Credit Ltd is licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya as a digital credit provider (licensed June 5, 2025, per the CBK Directory of Digital Credit Providers updated on September 29, 2026).

This guide explains how Watu Simu works, which phones are on offer, what it costs and what to check before you sign. Everything here comes from Watu’s own Kenya website and CBK’s directory, checked on October 27, 2026. Watu does not publish deposit amounts or daily rates online, so we have not invented any; the section on cost shows you how to get the real figure and judge it.

Watu Simu Requirements

Requirement What Watu asks for
Identity Original Kenyan national ID
Phone line Safaricom line registered for M-Pesa and active for at least 6 months
Next of kin Name and phone number of someone Watu can reach for verification
Down payment A “small down payment” on the chosen device (amount given at the dealer)
Age 18 years or older
Existing loans No active Watu loan

Watu says it looks at access rather than credit history, and that phone financing is approved “within 30 minutes”. There is no payslip requirement on its published list, which is why the plan is popular with boda riders, M-Pesa agents, farmers and small traders.

How to Get a Phone on Watu Simu

  1. Visit an authorised Watu Simu dealer with your ID. Watu checks your details on the spot.
  2. Choose your phone from the Samsung Galaxy range the dealer stocks.
  3. Make the down payment and sign the agreement. Read the first page, which should state the total you will pay.
  4. Pay daily or weekly through M-Pesa or the Watu app until the phone is paid off.

Only use dealers Watu lists as authorised, and never send a deposit to a personal number. If someone online offers a “Watu phone” with delivery after a deposit to their line, treat it as a scam.

Watu Simu Phones Available

Watu’s connectivity page listed these Samsung devices on October 27, 2026. It notes that availability differs by branch, dealer and agent.

Device How Watu describes it
Samsung Galaxy A07 Big screen, strong camera, for service-based work
Samsung Galaxy A17 Rugged design, big display, strong battery
Samsung Galaxy A26 5G Value 5G phone with a crisp display
Samsung Galaxy A36 5G Large display and strong battery
Samsung Galaxy A56 5G Top of the range, 5G and a better camera
Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 Compact tablet for running a business on the go

How Much Does a Watu Simu Phone Cost?

Watu does not publish deposits, daily rates or total prices on its website, so the only reliable figure is the one in your agreement. Its FAQ says there are “no hidden fees”. To judge whether the deal is fair, ask the dealer three numbers before you sign:

  • the down payment,
  • the daily or weekly instalment and the number of days or weeks,
  • the total amount you will have paid at the end.

Then compare the total with the cash price of the same model at a Samsung shop or major retailer that day. The difference is what the credit costs you. Our Lipa Mdogo Mdogo true cost guide walks through the arithmetic with worked examples, and it is worth five minutes before committing to months of payments. If you only need a small amount for a short time, compare with Fuliza charges too, though for a whole phone an instalment plan is usually the more structured option.

Paying Watu: App, M-Pesa and Another Number

Payments go through M-Pesa, and the Watu app lets you pay, check your balance and see your last 10 transactions. Watu’s FAQ explains that you can pay from a different number: sign in with your registered number, open Pay, choose “Pay with another number”, enter the paying number and how many days you are paying for, then continue as normal. Watu’s summarised loan terms also list the USSD code *876# for checking your account status at any time.

What Happens If You Miss a Payment?

Watu’s published summarised terms cover its motorbike and tuk-tuk loans, not phones, so check the phone agreement itself on missed payments, device locking and any penalties. For context, the vehicle terms say a missed weekly instalment counts as default, relationship officers then call or visit to agree a catch-up plan, and repossession follows if that fails. Ask the dealer in writing what applies to phones, and keep the answer.

Missed payments can also be reported to credit reference bureaus. If you have fallen behind, check your CRB status before applying for other credit, and read our CRB Kenya guide on clearing a listing. Watu Simu vs Other Lipa Mdogo Mdogo Plans

Watu competes with M-KOPA, Safaricom’s own Lipa Mdogo Mdogo and Lipa Later. Watu’s offer is Samsung only and dealer based, with the next-of-kin and six-month M-Pesa rules above. If you are weighing M-KOPA, our M-KOPA paybill guide covers how its payments work. Before choosing any of them, confirm the lender is licensed on our Verified Lender Tracker.
