Lipa Mdogo Mdogo vs Fuliza, Loan Apps and Sacco Loans

Lipa Mdogo Mdogo vs Fuliza, Tala or a Sacco loan: what KSh 19,700 for a phone really costs on each, worked from Safaricom, Tala and Sacco terms. 2026.

Lipa Mdogo Mdogo vs Fuliza, Loan Apps and Sacco Loans

Lipa Mdogo Mdogo vs Fuliza, a loan app or a Sacco loan: for a phone you will pay off over months, a Sacco loan is usually the cheapest credit, Lipa Mdogo Mdogo costs little in pure interest but ties every daily payment to bundles, while Fuliza and loan apps such as Tala are built for days or weeks and become very expensive if stretched over months. Cash saved up first beats all four.

Below we price the same need, KSh 19,700 to finance a phone, four ways, using each provider’s own published terms. Updated November 2026. Figures checked 2 November 2026 from Safaricom’s Lipa Mdogo Mdogo terms and Fuliza tariff, Tala’s published rates and a worked Sacco example.

The scenario

We use the Tecno Pop 7 on Safaricom’s Lipa Mdogo Mdogo table: financed price KSh 22,700, deposit KSh 3,000, so KSh 19,700 is on credit, repaid at KSh 100 a day over roughly a year. We then ask what borrowing that same KSh 19,700 would cost on Fuliza, Tala and a Sacco loan. Our Lipa Mdogo Mdogo true cost guide explains the method.

Lipa Mdogo Mdogo vs Fuliza vs loan app vs Sacco: the numbers

Option Published pricing Cost of KSh 19,700 Best for
Safaricom Lipa Mdogo Mdogo KSh 100 a day for about 366 days; about KSh 46 of each payment buys a bundle, about KSh 54 pays the phone Total paid KSh 39,583, of which about KSh 22,764 is the phone and about KSh 16,800 is bundles People with no savings or credit history who would buy those bundles anyway
Fuliza M-Pesa 1% access fee, then KSh 25 a day plus 20% excise (KSh 30) on balances of KSh 2,501 to 70,000 KSh 1,097 if repaid in 30 days; KSh 1,997 in 60 days A few days’ gap, not a phone
Tala (loan app) 0.3% to 0.6% a day, no access fee; one-time 8% late charge At 0.3%: KSh 1,773 for 30 days, KSh 3,546 for 60 days. At 0.6%: double Short loans you can clear by the due date
Sacco loan (illustration) Each Sacco publishes its own rate, usually per month on a reducing balance At an illustrative 1% a month over 12 months: KSh 1,750 a month, about KSh 1,304 interest Members with deposits and guarantors

Fuliza and Tala figures are our calculations from their published tariffs; the Sacco row uses an illustrative 1% a month rate, not any specific Sacco’s price. Check your own Sacco’s rate in our Sacco loan calculators.

Why Lipa Mdogo Mdogo looks dear but is not mostly interest

Safaricom’s terms split every repayment between a 24-hour bundle (voice, data and SMS) and the phone loan. On the Tecno Pop 7, about KSh 54 of each KSh 100 goes to the phone, so deposit plus phone payments come to roughly KSh 22,764, close to the KSh 22,700 financed price. The other roughly KSh 16,800 buys bundles. If you would spend that on airtime and data anyway, Lipa Mdogo Mdogo is cheap credit. If you would not, you are paying for bundles you do not need, and the phone becomes the most expensive option here.

Why Fuliza and loan apps are the wrong tool for a phone

Fuliza charges by the day. Leaving KSh 19,700 outstanding costs KSh 30 every day, about KSh 900 a month, before the 1% access fee; held for a year that would be roughly KSh 11,000. Fuliza limits are also set by Safaricom and most users would not be offered that much. Full fee bands are in our Fuliza charges guide.

Tala’s 0.3% to 0.6% a day equals 109.5% to 219% a year, as Tala itself states. Kept for 120 days at the lower rate, KSh 19,700 would cost about KSh 7,092. Loan app limits also start low and grow with repayment history. Compare apps in our cheapest loan apps in Kenya table.

When a Sacco loan wins

Sacco loans are priced per month, often on a reducing balance, and repaid over months or years, which suits a phone or laptop. The catch: you usually need to have been a member for some months, hold deposits (many Saccos lend a multiple of deposits) and find guarantors. If you already save in a Sacco, a small emergency or school-fees-style loan for a phone is usually far cheaper than Fuliza or an app.

Which should you choose?

  • You can wait a few months: save the daily amount instead. Our save-then-buy comparison shows the gap.
  • You are a Sacco member: ask for a short-term loan.
  • No savings, no Sacco, need the phone to earn now: Lipa Mdogo Mdogo, choosing the lowest-deposit phone you need.
  • Short cash gap of days: Fuliza or a licensed app, repaid fast.

Whatever you pick, check the lender is licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya; Safaricom’s phone loans and M-Pesa credit products are offered with partner banks.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lipa Mdogo Mdogo cheaper than Fuliza?

For a phone repaid over a year, yes, if you value the bundles. Fuliza costs KSh 30 a day on balances above KSh 2,500, so it suits only very short borrowing.

Can I use Fuliza to buy a phone?

Only if your Fuliza limit covers it and you can repay within days; the daily fee makes a months-long Fuliza balance costly.

What is Tala’s interest rate?

Tala states 0.3% to 0.6% a day, which it puts at 109.5% to 219% a year, with no access fees and a one-time 8% charge if you pay late.

Why does Lipa Mdogo Mdogo cost almost double the phone price?

Each daily payment also buys a 24-hour bundle. On the Tecno Pop 7, about KSh 16,800 of the KSh 39,583 total is bundles.
