How KCB Bank loan interest works in 2026

KCB Bank is Kenya’s largest bank by assets. Under the Central Bank of Kenya’s Risk-Based Credit Pricing Model, banks price new variable-rate shilling loans as a reference rate plus a premium known as “K”. The reference rate is the Central Bank Rate (CBR, 8.75% as of October 2026) or KESONIA. The premium depends on your credit risk, and fees and charges come on top. According to CBK data, KCB Bank’s average lending rate in August 2026 was 14.78%. The market-wide average was 14.34%. Published bank premiums over the CBR put KCB Bank’s indicative rates at roughly 13.21% to 17.28% a year before fees.

Loan types you can estimate

You can use the calculator to plan for KCB Bank’s main loan types: personal (salary-backed) loans, mobile loans through KCB M-Pesa, asset finance for vehicles, mortgages and business loans. Products, limits and terms change, so confirm the details with the bank before you apply. If the bank has quoted you a rate, type it into the rate box and the results update straight away.

How to use the calculator

  1. Pick a rate type from the dropdown. It fills in an indicative rate.
  2. Change the interest rate if KCB Bank has quoted you a different one.
  3. Enter the loan amount in Kenya shillings and the term in months.
  4. Choose reducing balance (used by most bank loans) or flat rate (common with some mobile and short-term loans).
  5. Tap “Show repayment schedule” to see how each payment splits between principal and interest.

Example: KES 100,000 over 12 months at 14.78% on a reducing balance works out to about KES 9,015 a month.

Typical requirements

Kenyan banks usually ask for a national ID, KRA PIN, recent payslips or bank statements, and a good credit record with the credit reference bureaus. Secured loans such as asset finance and mortgages also need documents for the security. For salary-backed loans, your employer may need to have a check-off arrangement with the bank.

Frequently asked questions

Is the rate shown my actual KCB loan rate?

No. The figures are indicative and come from CBK and bank-published data, checked on 13 October 2026. Your actual rate depends on your risk profile and the product. Processing fees, insurance and excise duty are extra.

Reducing balance or flat rate: which is cheaper?

At the same headline rate, reducing balance is cheaper, because you only pay interest on what you still owe. A flat rate charges interest on the full original amount for the whole term.

Can I lower my repayments?

A longer term lowers the monthly installment but raises the total interest you pay. Use the calculator to compare terms, and always ask KCB Bank for the Annual Percentage Rate (APR) and the total cost of credit before you sign.
