eCitizen is the government portal Kenyans use for passports, driving licences, business registration, NTSA services and many other public services. One account covers most of these, so it is worth setting it up properly the first time.
This guide walks through registration for a Kenyan citizen. Foreign residents and businesses use different options on the same portal.
What you need before you start
- Your National ID number (this becomes your username)
- Your first name exactly as it appears on the ID
- A working email address you can open right away
- A Kenyan mobile number for SMS verification
- A strong password you will remember
How to register on eCitizen
- Open the official registration page at accounts.ecitizen.go.ke/register (or start from ecitizen.go.ke and choose Create Account).
- Select Kenyan Citizen if that is your status. Foreign residents and businesses have separate paths.
- Enter your National ID number, first name, email and mobile number.
- Create a strong password and confirm it.
- Enter the SMS code sent to your phone to verify the number.
- Complete any email verification step if the portal asks for it.
- Turn on two-factor authentication when prompted. It adds a second check at login and reduces the risk of someone using your account for passport or land services.
Once you are in, you can open Immigration for passports, NTSA for vehicle and licence services, and other agencies linked to the same login.

Common problems and how to fix them
- Name or ID rejected: Type the first name exactly as on the ID. Extra spaces or a nickname will fail the check.
- No SMS code: Wait a minute, confirm the number is correct, then request a new code. Network delays are common.
- Forgot password: Use the Forgot Password link on the login page. Reset goes to the email you registered.
- Old email you no longer use: You may need help at a Huduma Centre or the eCitizen support channel listed on the portal to update contacts.
What you can do with the account
Typical services tied to eCitizen include passport applications, certificate of good conduct, driving licence renewal, NTSA TIMS vehicle services, and several county or agency payments. For student placement payments that stall on eCitizen, see our note on KUCCPS payments not reflecting.
If you are preparing job applications, you will often need a good conduct certificate and a KRA PIN as well. Browse current openings on Jobs in Kenya once your documents are in order.
Security tips
- Never share your eCitizen password or OTP with agents who claim they can “fast-track” a passport.
- Pay only through the official payment screens. Government invoices commonly use paybill 222222 with the invoice number as the account reference.
- Log out on shared phones and computers.
Fees and forms change, so always finish the process on the live eCitizen or agency page rather than from a screenshot someone sent you.
