Withdrawing cash is where most M-Pesa users lose money without noticing. The fee depends on the amount and on whether you use an agent or an ATM.

Agent withdrawal fees

Amount (KSh) Fee (KSh)
50 to 100 11
101 to 2,500 29
2,501 to 3,500 52
3,501 to 5,000 69
5,001 to 7,500 87
7,501 to 10,000 115
10,001 to 15,000 167
15,001 to 20,000 185
20,001 to 35,000 197
35,001 to 50,000 278
50,001 to 250,000 309

The minimum you can withdraw at an agent is KSh 50.

ATM withdrawal fees

Amount (KSh) Fee (KSh)
200 to 2,500 35
2,501 to 5,000 69
5,001 to 10,000 115
10,001 to 35,000 203

ATM withdrawals start at KSh 200 and Safaricom’s table goes up to KSh 35,000.

Agent or ATM?

For small amounts the agent is cheaper. Taking out KSh 2,000 costs KSh 29 at an agent and KSh 35 at an ATM. In the middle the two are often equal, and for KSh 20,001 to KSh 35,000 the ATM (KSh 203) is slightly dearer than an agent (KSh 197). Most people should default to an agent unless it is late at night or there is none nearby.

How to cut withdrawal costs

  • Avoid the band edges. KSh 2,500 costs KSh 29 at an agent, but KSh 2,600 costs KSh 52.
  • Withdraw less often. Fewer, larger withdrawals usually cost less than many small ones.
  • Pay with M-Pesa instead of cash. Most shops have a till, and paying through Buy Goods saves you the withdrawal fee completely.

Airtel Money charges the same withdrawal fees, as our M-Pesa vs Airtel Money comparison shows.
