Where Buscar travels

Buscar runs long-distance buses within Kenya and into Uganda. The routes most people ask about are:

  • Nairobi to Mombasa, and Mombasa to Nairobi
  • Nairobi to Malindi, through Mombasa, Mtwapa and Kilifi
  • Nairobi to Kisumu and on to Busia
  • Nairobi to Kampala through Busia, with a stop in Jinja
  • Mombasa to Kitale and Mombasa to Busia, for coast to western Kenya trips
  • Mombasa to Malindi along the coast

Departure times differ by season. Night buses are popular on the Mombasa route, so book early on Fridays, at the end of the month and before public holidays.

How to book a Buscar ticket

  1. Call the office you will depart from. Give your name, route, date and number of passengers, and ask for the fare and the exact boarding point.
  2. Pay only through an official channel. Pay at the booking office or to a company paybill or till that the office confirms. Do not send money to a personal mobile number.
  3. Get your ticket details. Keep the SMS or printed ticket with the seat number, bus number and departure time.
  4. Arrive early. Be at the stage at least 30 minutes before departure, or longer for cross-border trips where your ID or passport is checked.

Be careful with websites and WhatsApp numbers that claim to sell Buscar tickets. Several booking sites use the Buscar name but are not run by the company. Before paying, call 0790 700 700 to confirm that the seller is genuine.

Sending parcels with Buscar

Like most bus companies, Buscar carries parcels on its routes. Take the parcel to the booking office, where staff will weigh it and quote a price. Keep the receipt, and give the receiver the parcel number and the destination office phone number. Parcels are collected at the destination office with an ID. Ask about the cut-off time for the day’s bus so your parcel does not wait overnight.

Travelling to Uganda with Buscar

For Kampala trips you need a valid passport, or a national ID if you are an East African citizen using the East African Community arrangement. Carry your yellow fever card as well. Book with the Accra Road office or the main Nairobi line, and confirm whether the fare is quoted in Kenya or Uganda shillings. Fares in Uganda are paid in Uganda shillings (USh), so ask for the KSh equivalent if you are paying in Kenya.

Compare other bus companies

If Buscar is fully booked, other operators run the same corridors. See our guides to Easy Coach contacts for western Kenya and Chania Genesis contacts for the Mombasa and Malindi route. If you are budgeting for a trip and sending fare through M-Pesa, check the cost first with our M-Pesa charges calculator.
