Full List of Fertilizer Companies in Kenya

Quick answer

Kenya's main fertiliser companies are Yara East Africa, MEA Ltd (Nakuru), ETG (Mombasa, Falcon brand), Toyota Tsusho Fertilizer Africa (Eldoret), Omya-ARM and Maisha Mineral Fertilizer (Athi River), Elgon Kenya and KEL Chemicals. Subsidised fertiliser costs KSh 2,000 per 50kg bag at NCPB.

Updated 24 October 2026

Almost all the fertiliser used in Kenya is imported, then blended, bagged and distributed by a small group of companies. A fertiliser market inquiry published by the Competition Authority of Kenya put national demand at about 500,000 tonnes in 2012 and found that members of the Fertilizer Association of Kenya supplied about 95 percent of it, with Yara East Africa and MEA Ltd the largest. This list covers the main fertiliser companies you will find in Kenya, what each one does, and how the government’s subsidised fertiliser fits in.

1. Yara East Africa

Yara East Africa is a subsidiary of Norway’s Yara International and has imported and distributed fertiliser in Kenya since the mid-1990s. It sells crop-specific fertilisers and foliar micronutrient programmes for cereals, horticulture, tea, coffee, pasture and fruit, and runs farmer training. Its head office is on the 12th floor of the Mercure Hotel Annex on Longonot Road, Upper Hill, Nairobi. Its toll-free line is 0800 720 517 and sales email is saleskenya@yara.com.

2. MEA Ltd

MEA is a Kenyan-owned company that entered the market in 1977. It built a blending, bagging and storage plant in Nakuru in 1997 and runs depots across East and Central Africa. MEA also offers soil testing and uses the results to recommend blends for specific soils and crops, which makes it popular with farmers who want something more targeted than a standard DAP or CAN bag.

3. ETG

Export Trading Group is a Kenyan-founded agribusiness that works across Africa. Its fertiliser blending is done at its port-side facility in Mombasa, which lets it supply Kenya and neighbouring countries such as Uganda and Rwanda. ETG’s Falcon brand is widely sold. In 2026 the Anti-Counterfeit Authority seized fake bags printed to look like Falcon fertiliser in Kakamega, so buy from known stockists and check the bag carefully.

4. Toyota Tsusho Fertilizer Africa (TTFA)

TTFA runs a blending plant in Eldoret and mainly serves farmers in western Kenya and the Rift Valley grain belt, where demand for planting and top-dressing fertiliser for maize and wheat is highest. An AGRA assessment of Kenya’s fertiliser distribution lists it among the country’s commercial blenders alongside ETG, MEA and Omya-ARM.

5. Omya-ARM

This company in Athi River grew out of Athi River Mining, which was a member of the Fertilizer Association of Kenya and blended fertiliser locally. Its location is tied to its lime deposits, and lime is a key part of its products. Agricultural lime is often recommended for acidic soils in western and central Kenya before fertiliser is applied.

6. Maisha Mineral Fertilizer (Mavuno)

Maisha Mineral Fertilizer Ltd processes granulated NPK fertiliser blends in Athi River, sold under the Mavuno name. Its range includes Mavuno Planting, Mavuno Top Dressing and a vegetable blend. The company’s expansion plans have gone through an environmental and social impact assessment with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

7. Elgon Kenya

Elgon Kenya describes itself as the leading agri-input supplier in East Africa and is especially strong in floriculture and horticulture. Besides fertilisers it sells crop protection chemicals, seeds, irrigation equipment, greenhouse sheeting, nets, packaging and animal health products, so large farms often buy their full input list from it.

8. KEL Chemicals

KEL Chemicals in Thika is one of the few firms that has actually manufactured fertiliser in Kenya, making single superphosphate from phosphate rock, some of it supplied by Minjingu in Tanzania. It remains better known as an industrial chemicals manufacturer.

Other importers and traders

The Fertilizer Association of Kenya has also listed importers such as Devji Meghji and Bros, Shah Kanji Lalji and Sons, Turbo Highway, Afri-Ventures, Supplies and Services, Metro Plastics and Louis Dreyfus. Most farmers buy their brands through agro-dealers rather than directly.

Subsidised fertiliser through NCPB

The government’s National Fertilizer Subsidy Programme sells fertiliser through National Cereals and Produce Board depots and county last-mile centres. From late August 2026, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe cut the price of a 50kg bag to KSh 2,000, down from KSh 2,500, for both planting and top-dressing fertiliser. To buy it:

  1. Register free on the Kenya Integrated Agricultural Management Information System (KIAMIS) at your county, sub-county or ward agriculture office.
  2. Wait for the SMS e-voucher showing how many bags you can buy, based on the acreage you declared.
  3. Go in person to an NCPB depot or last-mile centre with your original ID.
  4. Pay through the depot’s M-Pesa till or bank account. NCPB does not accept cash or give credit, and you cannot buy on behalf of someone else.

Tips for buying fertiliser

  • Test your soil first. MEA and county agriculture offices offer soil testing, and the right blend can save you money.
  • Buy from registered agro-dealers or NCPB, and check that the bag is sealed, labelled and not underweight.
  • Report suspect bags to the Anti-Counterfeit Authority or your county agriculture office.
