Kiambu County, which borders Nairobi to the north, has dozens of post offices, and each one has its own five-digit postal code. Thika is 01000, Kiambu Town is 00900, Ruiru is 00232, Kikuyu is 00902 and Limuru is 00217. This guide lists the codes for the county’s main towns and smaller post offices, grouped by area, and explains how to write an address correctly.

What a Kenyan postal code is

The Postal Corporation of Kenya (Posta) describes a postcode as a way of identifying an individual post office by a distinct code. The country is split into postal regions, and offices within each region share a prefix followed by digits that show their place in that region. Posta says the codes reduce the risk of mail being mis-sorted where town names look alike, make room for more private letter boxes and allow automated sorting.

A Kenyan postal address has three parts: the box number, the postal code of the post office where the box is, and the town. For example, P.O. Box 123-00900, Kiambu means box 123 at the Kiambu post office. The code belongs to the post office, not to your house, so use the code of the office where you rent your box even if you live elsewhere.

When you will need a Kiambu postal code

Postal codes still appear on many forms even though fewer people send letters. You are likely to be asked for one when you:

  • open a bank or SACCO account, or apply for a loan;
  • register a business name or apply for a KRA PIN;
  • fill in job applications and CVs that ask for a postal address;
  • receive parcels from abroad through Posta, which handles postal items cleared by customs;
  • register for exams or school admissions that ask for a guardian’s address.

If you are importing goods by post, our guide to KRA duty and postal or courier charges on items bought abroad explains what you may pay before collection. Online shoppers can also use Jumia pick-up stations in Kiambu instead of a post box.

How to get a post office box in Kiambu

Boxes are rented at the post office itself, and you choose the office whose code you want on your address. Visit the counter with your national ID (and your business registration papers if the box is for a business), fill in the application, and pay the yearly rental. Posta also offers e-services, and payments made through eCitizen attract a KSh 50 convenience fee according to Posta’s own services page. Rental charges differ for individuals and companies, so ask for the current rate at the counter.

Once your box is active, share the full address with the box number, the code and the town. A letter addressed to “P.O. Box 45, Thika” without the code may still arrive, but adding 01000 cuts the chance of it being sent to the wrong office.
