Kenyan passports are issued by the Directorate of Immigration Services. You start on eCitizen, pay the fee shown on your invoice, then book biometrics at a passport processing centre. Adult ordinary passports are valid for 10 years.

Treat the amount on the eCitizen invoice as what you will pay. Booklet options on the portal have changed during 2026, so confirm what the live form offers before you travel to the centre.

Passport fees (confirm on eCitizen)

Immigration publishes this schedule on immigration.go.ke under Type and Fees:

Type Pages Amount (KES)
Ordinary A series 34 7,550
Ordinary B series 50 9,550
Ordinary C series 66 12,050
Diplomatic — 15,050
Mutilated passport replacement — 20,050
Lost passport replacement — 20,050

In early 2026, reporting on the eCitizen form found many applicants only able to select the 66-page ordinary booklet, with a portal charge around KES 12,500. If A or B series do not appear for you, budget for the option the form allows. The invoice is authoritative.

Scheduled fee: KES 12,050

Pay the amount your eCitizen invoice shows if it differs.

Step-by-step application

  1. Log in at dis.ecitizen.go.ke.
  2. Choose Apply for a Passport and read the instructions.
  3. Select reason (new, renewal, replacement, minor) and booklet type offered.
  4. Enter personal details exactly as on your ID and birth certificate.
  5. Choose a processing centre. Immigration lists Nairobi (Nyayo House), Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret, Nakuru, Embu, Kisii, Kericho and Bungoma.
  6. Submit and note the invoice reference.
  7. Pay on the official eCitizen payment screen.
  8. Book biometrics after payment clears.
  9. Print the form and receipts. Carry originals to the centre.
  10. Complete verification and biometric capture, then track status on eCitizen.

Immigration’s 2025 service charter cited about 14 working days after a complete application. Centre queues vary. Do not buy non-refundable tickets until you have the passport in hand.

Diaspora

Apply through the nearest Kenya mission. Ask the embassy or high commission how appointments work before you pay.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Names that do not match civil documents
  • Arriving without printed receipts
  • Photocopies without originals
  • Leaving no buffer before travel dates
