T-Kash is Telkom Kenya’s mobile money service. It is smaller than M-Pesa and Airtel Money, but it works for sending money to any network, paying bills, buying airtime and moving money to banks. If you have a Telkom line, knowing what T-Kash charges for each service helps you decide when to use it and when another wallet is cheaper. This guide explains what is free, what carries a fee, the limits and how to make sure you never pay a fee you did not expect.
How T-Kash Shows Its Fees
Unlike M-Pesa and Airtel Money, which publish full tariff tables, Telkom does not keep a complete T-Kash fee table on its main website. Instead, the exact charge for each transaction appears on your screen before you enter your PIN. That means you always see the fee first and can cancel if it is not what you expected. Treat the confirmation screen as the official price for that transaction.
Free T-Kash Services
| Service | Charge |
|---|---|
| Registration | Free |
| Deposit at an agent | Free |
| Buying airtime | Free |
| Checking your balance | Free |
| Changing your PIN | Free |
Depositing cash at an agent being free means topping up T-Kash costs you nothing, which is the same as on the other major wallets.
Services That Carry a Fee
- Sending money to other T-Kash users, or to M-Pesa and Airtel Money numbers.
- Withdrawing cash at a T-Kash agent.
- Paying a paybill or business number, depending on the merchant arrangement.
- Sending money to a bank account.
Fees rise in bands with the amount you send or withdraw, as with other mobile money services. Small amounts carry small fees, and the fee grows as the amount moves into higher bands.
How to Check the Fee Before Paying
- Open the T-Kash menu on your Telkom SIM, or the T-Kash app.
- Choose Send Money, then pick the destination: T-Kash, another network or a bank.
- Enter the number or bank details and the amount.
- Read the fee shown on the confirmation screen.
- Enter your PIN only if you are happy with the charge. Otherwise cancel.
T-Kash Limits
| Limit | Amount |
|---|---|
| Per transaction | KSh 250,000 |
| Per day | KSh 500,000 |
| Maximum wallet balance | KSh 500,000 |
How T-Kash Compares With M-Pesa and Airtel Money
Since 2018, Kenyan regulators have required mobile money services to work together, so you can send from T-Kash to M-Pesa or Airtel Money and back. Fees for sending to other networks are broadly in line across providers. Before moving large amounts, compare the fee shown on T-Kash with the published tariffs in our guides to M-Pesa withdrawal charges and Airtel Money charges. Our comparison of M-Pesa and Airtel Money also helps if you are deciding which wallet to use day to day.
Ways to Keep T-Kash Costs Low
- Send fewer, larger amounts where it makes sense, rather than many small transfers that each carry a fee.
- Pay merchants directly instead of withdrawing cash and paying in cash.
- Check whether the receiver can use T-Kash. Transfers within the same network can differ in cost from cross network ones.
- Avoid withdrawing just to redeposit on another wallet. Use direct cross network sending, explained in our guide to moving money between M-Pesa, Airtel Money and T-Kash.
Who T-Kash Works Best For
T-Kash makes most sense for people who already use a Telkom line, either as their main number or as a second SIM for data. It is handy as a backup when another network has an outage, and for receiving money from relatives on any network without changing phones. Small traders near Telkom agents can also use it to accept payments. If most of the people you pay and receive from are on M-Pesa, you may find yourself sending across networks often, so check the fees on screen over a few weeks and decide whether keeping a balance on T-Kash saves you money or not.
