Quick answer
On KRA iTax, returns are uploaded as the ZIP file the Excel template creates. Supporting documents such as manual invoices go up as a single file, preferably a PDF, of up to 10 MB, according to KRA's user guide.
Updated 17 October 2026
KRA iTax asks for two very different kinds of upload, and mixing them up is a common reason filing stalls. Your return itself goes up as a ZIP file created by KRA’s Excel template. Supporting documents, such as manual invoices or evidence for income and expense adjustments, go up as a single PDF. The tool above prepares that PDF on your own device, combining phone photos or scans and keeping it under the size iTax accepts. Nothing is uploaded to our server.
KRA iTax Upload Rules
- Returns: ZIP only. KRA’s filing guidance says you download the Excel return, fill it in, click Validate, and the template creates a zipped file in your Documents folder. You then upload that ZIP under “Upload Form” in iTax. Do not compress, rename or re-zip it yourself, and do not run it through this tool.
- Supporting documents: one PDF, maximum 10 MB. KRA’s user guide on income and expense validations advises taxpayers to scan manual invoices and other supporting documents into a single file, preferably a PDF, with a current maximum file size of 10 MB. The same applies to documentation for income or expense adjustments, where financial statements, management accounts with notes and schedules, and the tax computation are mandatory.
The tool defaults to 9,500 KB, just under the 10 MB limit, so the PDF stays as sharp as possible while still passing.
When You Need This
Since KRA began validating expenses against eTIMS and TIMS records, expenses that are not on electronic invoices must be declared under Manual Non eTIMS/TIMS Expenses with the supporting invoices uploaded. Businesses and landlords with paper receipts are the most affected. The guide notes that you can update these expenses more than once before uploading the return, and iTax applies the most recent upload, which must be the full updated list rather than only the new items.

How to Build Your Supporting PDF
- Sort the invoices in the same order as your schedule, so an officer can follow them.
- Photograph each one flat, in daylight, with the amount, date and supplier PIN readable.
- Choose “Images to PDF” and select all the photos at once. They become pages of one PDF in the order you selected them.
- If you already have a large PDF, such as a scanned set of accounts, use “Compress PDF” instead.
- Check the size line, download, and upload the file in the supporting documents section of the return.
Common iTax Upload Errors
The return upload is rejected
That is a ZIP problem, not a size problem. Re-open the Excel template, fix any validation errors it flags, validate again and upload the new ZIP. Our guide on filing KRA returns on iTax walks through it.
Supporting document too large
Hundreds of photographed receipts quickly pass 10 MB. Compress to 9,500 KB with the tool. If the text becomes hard to read, split the year into two PDFs only if the screen allows more than one file.
Invoices unreadable after compression
Take the photos closer, so each receipt fills the frame, and avoid shadows. Sharp originals compress far better.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I upload JPG receipts directly?
KRA’s guide recommends a single file, preferably a PDF. Combining the photos into one PDF with the tool is the safest choice.
Will compressing change my figures?
No. The tool only changes image quality and size, never the content, though pages become images and the text is no longer selectable.
Are my financial documents safe here?
Your files never leave your device. The processing happens inside your browser.
Is there a fee?
No. The tool is free.
