How to use the m-pesa agent shop profit calculator

Enter your startup cost, your expected sales for a month and the cost of goods as a share of sales. Then add rent, wages, licences spread over a month and other running costs such as electricity, transport and repairs. The calculator shows profit, margin, the sales you need to cover your costs and how many months of profit repay the startup cost.

Main costs in a M-Pesa agent business

An agent earns commission on deposits and withdrawals, not a margin on goods, so the cost of goods is zero and income depends on how many transactions you handle. You also need float, money tied up in cash and e-money that is not a cost but must be funded.

Licences and permits

You apply to Safaricom through an approved dealer and need a KRA PIN, a business permit, a registered business name and a certificate of good conduct for the operator. Every business also needs a KRA PIN, and most need a single business permit from the county. Registering a business name lets you open a business bank account. Our guide to the legal requirements for starting a business covers the rest.

How to make the M-Pesa agent business more profitable

Location matters more than anything else. Shops near markets, bus stages and estates with few banks see the most traffic. Many agents add airtime, phone accessories or a small shop to the counter.

Understanding break-even and payback

Break-even sales is the monthly turnover at which you neither make nor lose money. If your expected sales are well above it, you have room for slow months. Payback is the startup cost divided by monthly profit. A short payback means less risk, but always add a few months for the slow start most businesses go through.

Hiring staff

If you need riders, attendants or shop assistants, you can find workers through jobinkenya.co.ke. Remember wages, NSSF and SHIF contributions all belong in your running costs.
