Mwalimu National DT Sacco, the teachers’ Sacco headquartered at Mwalimu Towers in Upper Hill, Nairobi, paid 13% on share capital and 10.05% on member deposits for 2025. The deposit rate edged up from 10.00% in 2024, while the dividend was held at 13%. The calculator below works out what your own deposits would earn at the 2025 rate.

Rates are what was last published, gross of tax. Money market funds are compounded monthly; bills, bonds, deposits and SACCO returns are worked out as simple interest. Your actual return will differ.

The default is the 10.05% deposit rate. Change it to 13% to estimate the dividend on your shares. The 5% withholding tax on Sacco payouts is deducted automatically.

Mwalimu National Returns by Year

Financial year Dividend on share capital Interest on deposits
2025 13% 10.05%
2024 13% 10.00%

Mwalimu’s rates are lower than some smaller Saccos’, but it is one of the biggest in the country. Sacco Review, reporting the 2025 accounts, described it as Kenya’s largest Sacco by assets. Total assets grew from KSh 68 billion to KSh 76 billion, member deposits from KSh 52.2 billion to KSh 56.5 billion, and loans to members from KSh 47 billion to KSh 56 billion. Its surplus rose 76.3% to KSh 1.27 billion.

Why the Rates Stayed Modest Despite Higher Profit

A Sacco’s dividend depends on how much surplus it has relative to share capital and deposits, and on how much it chooses to keep as reserves. Mwalimu’s equity grew 13.7% to KSh 11.4 billion in 2025, which strengthens its capital position. Members gain stability from that, even if the yearly rate looks lower than at Saccos paying 12% or more on deposits.

Worked Example

A teacher who kept KSh 400,000 in deposits through 2025 and holds KSh 30,000 in share capital would have earned KSh 40,200 in interest and KSh 3,900 in dividends, KSh 44,100 before tax. After the 5% withholding tax that is about KSh 41,900.
