Tala vs M-Shwari: worked cost examples

These use the published rates only. Tala’s daily rate is set per customer between 0.3% and 0.6%; we show both ends.

Loan Tala at 0.3%/day Tala at 0.6%/day M-Shwari (9%)
KSh 2,000 for 5 days KSh 30 KSh 60 KSh 180
KSh 2,000 for 30 days KSh 180 KSh 360 KSh 180
KSh 10,000 for 30 days KSh 900 KSh 1,800 KSh 900
KSh 10,000 for 120 days KSh 3,600 KSh 7,200 Not available (one-month term)

Tala’s own example matches the last row: borrowing KSh 10,000 at 0.3% a day for 120 days costs KSh 3,600 in interest, so you repay KSh 13,600. With M-Shwari, note that the excise duty is deducted from the amount sent to your M-PESA, so you receive slightly less than you asked for.

When Tala is cheaper

  • You will repay within days, not weeks. Daily pricing means a five-day loan costs a fraction of M-Shwari’s flat fee.
  • You qualify for Tala’s 0.3% rate and need more than a month. M-Shwari simply does not offer longer terms.

When M-Shwari is cheaper

  • You need the money for the whole month and Tala has priced you above 0.3% a day. At 0.6%, Tala costs double.
  • You already save on M-Shwari: saving is one of Safaricom’s stated conditions for a loan limit, and you can repay straight from your savings.

Eligibility

Tala: any Kenyan resident aged 18 or over with a valid ID and mobile number can apply in the app. M-Shwari: Safaricom says you need to have been on M-PESA for at least six months, save on M-Shwari and actively use Safaricom voice, data and M-PESA. Watch the late-payment costs

Tala charges a one-time 8% late interest if you miss midnight on your due date, and can report long-term defaulters to credit reference bureaus. For any mobile loan, late repayment hurts your future limits and your credit record. Read our M-Shwari charges breakdown and compare more lenders on the loan app cost checker.
