For antenatal visits and normal deliveries, a comprehensive health centre near you can save a long trip. SHA lists 19 comprehensive health centres in the county, including these public ones run by the county government:

  • Voi: Maungu Model Health Centre
  • Mwatate: Mwambirwa Sub County Health Centre
  • Taveta: Njukini Health Centre

What SHA pays for when you give birth

The Tariffs for Healthcare Services, 2025 (Legal Notice 56 of 2025) set out the maternity package under SHA:

Service SHA tariff Where it applies
Normal delivery and essential newborn care KSh 10,000 Level 2 to Level 6
Caesarean section and essential newborn care KSh 30,000 Level 2 to Level 6, as needed
Anti-D serum for Rhesus-negative mothers KSh 6,000 Level 2 to Level 6

The package covers midwifery and nursing care, theatre and maternity ward charges including meals, newborn immunisation, medicines during and after admission, laboratory tests, blood products, oxygen, postnatal family planning, and treatment of complications such as postpartum bleeding, infections and newborn jaundice or sepsis. Antenatal and postnatal clinics are covered under outpatient care at Level 2 and 3 facilities and selected Level 4 hospitals contracted for primary healthcare. The Digital Health Agency’s claims rules add that the delivery rate covers up to 48 hours after a normal birth and 72 hours after a caesarean; if the mother or baby needs to stay longer because of complications, the daily inpatient rate applies.

How to make sure SHA covers your delivery

  1. Check that you are registered and active. Dial *147# from the phone registered with SHA, or log in through the SHA portal. If you have not registered, follow our guide on how to register for SHA.
  2. Keep contributions up to date. Self-employed members can work out what they owe with our SHIF calculator. Salaried members should confirm deductions are reflecting.
  3. Register your baby. Add your newborn as a dependant soon after birth so their own clinic visits are covered.
  4. Carry your ID and phone. Hospitals verify SHA members using the national ID and the registered phone number.
  5. Ask before you pay. If a facility asks for a top-up, ask what the charge is for and whether it falls outside the SHA package.
