How junior secondary works under CBC

Junior secondary school covers Grades 7, 8 and 9 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). Learners join after sitting the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) at the end of Grade 6. At the end of Grade 9 they sit the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment, which, together with school-based assessment, guides their placement into senior school pathways (STEM, social sciences, or arts and sports science) from Grade 10. The first Grade 10 learners joined senior school in January 2026; our senior school fees guide explains the costs.

How to enrol a child in a public JSS in Kibra

  1. Start with your current school. If your child is in Grade 6 at a public primary school that hosts a JSS, they usually continue there.
  2. If you are moving schools, visit the JSS you prefer and ask the head teacher whether there are Grade 7 places.
  3. Carry the documents schools normally ask for: the child’s birth certificate, the KPSEA result slip, a transfer or leaving letter from the previous school, and the child’s NEMIS or UPI number. Our guide on how to get a NEMIS number explains the UPI.
  4. Ask about costs such as uniform, lunch programmes and any parents’ association contributions, since tuition at public schools is funded by the government.
  5. Contact the Kibra Sub-County Education Office if you cannot find a place, or if you need help with a transfer.

Choosing a junior school in Kibra

  • Distance and safety: a school your child can walk to safely saves transport money and time.
  • Teachers and labs: ask how many JSS teachers the school has and whether it has a science room or computer lab for practical subjects.
  • Class sizes: ask about the Grade 7 enrolment and how many learners share a classroom.
  • Feeding programme: ask whether the school takes part in a school meals programme.
  • Clubs and sport: co-curricular activities count towards CBC and help children discover talents for senior school pathways.
