Membership Fees and Share Capital

Membership is open to Kenyan citizens living in Kenya and abroad. GDC Sacco publishes these figures:

Category Registration (KSh) Share capital (KSh) Minimum monthly savings (KSh)
Imara (employees on check-off) 500 25,000 1,000
Meridian (individual employees) 500 25,000 1,000
Business persons 500 25,000 1,000
Group 500 25,000 1,000
Diaspora 500 25,000 1,000
Corporate 500 50,000 1,000

The same page also says a member must pay a minimum share capital of KSh 5,000 before being eligible for any credit facility. The two figures are both published, so ask your branch which applies to you and over what period the full share capital must be paid. Lump-sum deposits must stay in the Sacco for at least six months before you can use them to qualify for a loan.

GDC Sacco Loans: Rates and Limits

Loan Limit Repayment Interest (as published)

Supersaver loan 4 times deposits (deposits above KSh 500,000) Up to 60 months 13% a year, reducing balance

Daraja loan (education) Not stated Up to 60 months 13% a year, reducing balance
Emergency loan Not clearly stated Up to 12 months 13% a year, reducing balance
Imarisha business loan (SME) Deposits of at least 25% of the loan Up to 12 months 10% flat

Mazao and Ng’ombe dairy loans KSh 500,000 unsecured; KSh 3 million secured 18 months unsecured; 24 months secured Not stated

For all short-term loans, GDC Sacco says you must have saved consistently for at least six months, be fully paid up on share capital and show the ability to repay. Note that a 10% flat rate costs more than 10% on a reducing balance, because the interest is worked out on the full loan for the whole period. Compare offers with our guide to bank vs Sacco loans.
