Quick answer: NCBA online trading means buying and selling Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) shares yourself through NCBA Investment Bank, the group’s licensed stockbroker. You first open a CDS (securities) account with NCBA Investment Bank as your broker, then trade either on the NCBA Online Share Trading (OST) web platform or through the NCBA mobile banking app. You can fund your trading account through M-Pesa Paybill 488522 using your CDS account number.
This guide covers what the platforms do, how to open the account, how to fund it, what you pay and who to call. It is based on NCBA Investment Bank’s own pages, its published account opening forms and the Central Depository and Settlement Corporation (CDSC) procedures and paybill list, read on 25 October 2026. NCBA Group itself is listed on the NSE and South Africa’s Nedbank’s offer for a majority stake has turned unconditional, as we reported in our coverage of the Nedbank deal. That deal does not change how a client account at NCBA Investment Bank works.

What Is NCBA Online Share Trading?
NCBA describes Online Share Trading (OST) as a web-based application for clients registered with its stockbroking business to trade through the internet. According to NCBA Investment Bank, OST gives you:
- real-time streaming share prices in your browser;
- the ability to place and manage your own buy and sell orders;
- real-time reports, including available funds, portfolio valuation, transaction statements and contract notes; and
- online payment requests, so you can ask for money from sales to be paid out.
NCBA also offers share trading inside its mobile banking app. The bank says the app lets customers “be your own broker” with a direct link to the NSE trading platform, on Android and iPhone.
NCBA Online Trading vs Mobile App vs Calling Your Broker
| Route | Best for | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| OST web platform | Watching live prices and statements on a laptop | CDS account with NCBA Investment Bank plus OST login |
| NCBA mobile banking app | Trading on your phone alongside your NCBA bank account | NCBA customer with the app, linked to your CDS account |
How to Open an NCBA Investment Bank Trading Account
Every NSE investor needs a CDS account, which holds your shares electronically at CDSC. You open it through a central depository agent such as a stockbroker, and NCBA Investment Bank is one. NCBA publishes separate account opening forms for individuals (the Personal Securities Account Opening Form), companies and joint accounts.
- Get the right form. Download the personal, corporate or joint securities account opening form from NCBA Investment Bank’s downloads page, or ask at an NCBA branch.
- Prepare your details. CDSC’s procedures list what is captured for a new account: ID type (national ID or passport) and number, your names as on the ID, date of birth, gender, nationality, mobile number, email, postal address, how you want dividends paid, your bank account details, your KRA PIN if you are resident, and your tax status. Tax-exempt investors must provide a copy of the exemption certificate.
- Attach your ID. A copy of both sides of your national ID, or your passport.
- Submit and wait for approval. Under CDSC’s digital procedures, the broker verifies your details and attaches your know-your-customer documents within one business day, then CDSC approves or rejects the request within one further business day.
- Register for online access. Once you have a CDS account number, register on the online or mobile platform with your CDS account number, ID number and the email and mobile number held on your CDS record. CDSC says the platform checks your details against the CDS and sends a one-time password by SMS or email to finish registration.
CDSC’s rules say only individuals can open or register accounts digitally. Joint account holders and companies use the manual, form-based process. For a broker-neutral walkthrough, see how to buy shares on the NSE in 2026.
How to Fund Your NCBA Trading Account
CDSC’s list of activated stockbroker paybills shows NCBA’s as 488522. To deposit:
- Go to M-Pesa, then Lipa na M-Pesa, then Pay Bill.
- Enter business number 488522.
- Enter your CDS account number as the account number.
- Enter the amount and your PIN, then confirm.
The same paybill works with Safaricom’s Lipa Hisa na Bonga Points scheme, where CDSC says Bonga points are redeemed at KSh 1 for every 5 points. After funding, place your order on OST or the app. If you hold an NCBA bank account you can also move money from it; check the transfer options in the app.
Fees and Charges
Buying and selling NSE shares attracts brokerage commission plus statutory levies set by the market regulators (the NSE, the Capital Markets Authority, CDSC and the Investor Compensation Fund). NCBA does not publish a separate online-only commission on the pages we checked, so ask the dealing desk for its current schedule and the minimum charge per trade before your first order. Our guide to buying shares on the NSE explains the statutory charges and how contract notes show them.
Tips Before You Trade
- Keep the mobile number and email on your CDS record up to date, because the OTP for online registration goes there.
- Check that any broker you use is licensed. Our list of licensed investment advisers and licensed derivatives brokers shows how to confirm with the CMA.
- Dividends go to the bank account or M-Pesa you chose on your CDS form. See KCB dividend dates and Safaricom dividend dates for examples.
- New listings are bought differently from listed shares. Read how to buy IPO shares in Kenya if you are applying for an offer.
