What the October results tell investors

  • Longer bonds pay more. Yields rose with time to maturity, from 12.73% on the 7.8-year bond to 14.18% on the 29.6-year bond. That curve is far above the 91-day Treasury bill, which cleared at 8.7498% on 29 October.
  • Retail money dominated. Non-competitive bids, the route used by smaller investors bidding at the average rate, made up KSh 54.68 billion of the KSh 57.51 billion accepted on 5 October, and KSh 30.66 billion of KSh 53.05 billion on 19 October.
  • Discounts on the long bonds. At 14.18%, the 30-year bond sold at about KSh 88.34 per KSh 100 of face value because its 12.5% coupon is below the yield investors demanded. The 7.8-year bond sold slightly above par (KSh 100.65) because its 12.34% coupon was close to the accepted yield.
  • All new borrowing. Neither auction had redemptions to refinance, so the full amounts accepted (KSh 57.51 billion and KSh 53.05 billion) were new borrowing.

What a bond pays you: a worked example

A Treasury bond pays its coupon twice a year on face value. KSh 100,000 face value of FXD1/2026/030 (coupon 12.5%) pays KSh 6,250 every six months before tax, or KSh 5,625 after the 10% withholding tax shown in CBK’s prospectus. If you bought at the 19 October average price of 88.3420, the bond would cost about KSh 88,342 plus accrued interest, and you would receive KSh 100,000 back at maturity in March 2056. Bonds, bills or funds?

Bonds lock in a coupon for years but can be sold only on the secondary market before maturity, at a price that moves. Treasury bills return cash in 91 to 364 days.
