Updated 1 November 2026

Salary advance loans in Kenya let you borrow against your next pay, usually only from the bank that receives your salary. In 2026 the main bank options range from 50% of last month’s net pay repaid within 45 days (Family Bank) to up to KSh 1 million over 12 months (Co-op Bank Flexi Plus). Equity lends up to KSh 300,000 over up to 12 months and NCBA up to KSh 250,000 over up to 6 months. The cost differs a lot, so compare the fee, not just the limit. Updated November 2026.

Updated November 2026. Sources: product pages of Family Bank, Co-operative Bank, Equity Bank, NCBA and KCB, all read 1 November 2026. All five banks are licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya. This is information, not financial advice.

What a salary advance really costs

A flat fee looks small but is expensive over a short period. Take a KSh 20,000 Family Bank advance repaid at the next payday:

  • Commission at 10%: KSh 2,000
  • Excise duty at 20% of the commission: KSh 400
  • Total cost: KSh 2,400 for about a month, or 12% of the amount borrowed.

Over a year, repeating that every month would cost far more than a personal loan at the 15% to 18% a year that big banks file for personal lending (see best banks for personal loans in Kenya). A salary advance makes sense for a one-off emergency, not as a monthly habit.

For the longer Co-op Flexi Plus, the 3% fee on KSh 100,000 is KSh 3,000 upfront, and interest is then charged over 4 to 12 months. Ask the bank for the Total Cost of Credit statement, which shows interest, fees and levies together.

Salary advance vs mobile loans and Fuliza

Option Best for Watch out for
Bank salary advance A known gap until payday; larger amounts Only from your salary bank; fees on short terms
M-Shwari or KCB M-Pesa Small, quick amounts on your phone Facility fees each month
Fuliza Covering a payment that is a few hundred shillings short Daily charges add up if not cleared
Sacco emergency loan Members with deposits Needs savings history and guarantors

Compare the mobile options in Fuliza vs M-Shwari and KCB M-Pesa vs M-Shwari, and Sacco borrowing in bank vs Sacco loans.

How to apply for a salary advance

  1. Confirm your salary has gone into the bank for the required period (3 months for Equity and Co-op).
  2. Get an employer confirmation or introduction letter and your latest payslip.
  3. Apply at a branch, or in the app where offered (Family Bank PesaPap and ATMs, KCB app).
  4. Read the offer letter for the fee, interest and repayment date before you accept.
  5. Make sure your next salary covers the repayment plus your fixed bills.

Avoiding salary advance traps

  • Do not roll one advance into the next; the fees compound.
  • Check that any app offering “salary advances” is a bank or a lender on the CBK list: see CBK-licensed digital lenders.
  • If you need more than one month’s help, a short personal loan or a check-off loan is usually cheaper.
