Import Duty on Toyota Vitz in Kenya 2026 by Year and Engine

Updated 1 November 2026

The import duty on Toyota Vitz cars brought into Kenya in 2026 ranges from about KSh 511,691 to KSh 1,357,980 in total KRA taxes, depending on the variant and year of manufacture. These figures use KRA’s Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) list of July 2025, which has 3 Vitz variants priced from KSh 3,251,359 to KSh 3,451,521, and KRA’s own worksheet: 35% import duty, 20% excise for engines up to 1,500cc (25% or 35% for bigger engines), 16% VAT, 2.5% Import Declaration Fee and 2% Railway Development Levy. Because of KEBS’s eight-year rule, only Vitzs made in 2019 or later can be imported in 2026.

Toyota Vitz variants on the KRA CRSP list

Variant (KRA name) Model code Engine Fuel CRSP
VITZ HYBRID U DAA-NHP130-AHXEB 1,496cc Gasoline KSh 3,251,359
VITZ HYBRID F DAA-NHP130-VTPBXN 1,496cc Gasoline KSh 3,440,622
HYBRID F / VITZ HYBRID F DAA-NHP130-VTPBXN 1,496cc Gasoline KSh 3,451,521

KRA lists hybrids under gasoline. Match your car’s model code (on the export certificate or auction sheet) to the right row, because two Vitzs that look alike can carry different CRSP values.

Import duty on Toyota Vitz by year of manufacture

Total KRA taxes (import duty + excise + VAT + IDF + RDL) for a direct import assessed in 2026:

Variant 2025 2024 2023 2022 2021 2020 2019
VITZ HYBRID U (1,496cc) KSh 1,279,228 KSh 1,023,382 KSh 895,460 KSh 767,537 KSh 639,614 KSh 575,653 KSh 511,691
VITZ HYBRID F (1,496cc) KSh 1,353,692 KSh 1,082,954 KSh 947,584 KSh 812,215 KSh 676,846 KSh 609,161 KSh 541,477
HYBRID F / VITZ HYBRID F (1,496cc) KSh 1,357,980 KSh 1,086,384 KSh 950,586 KSh 814,788 KSh 678,990 KSh 611,091 KSh 543,192

KRA depreciation for direct imports in 2026: 2025 model 0%, 2024 20%, 2023 30%, 2022 40%, 2021 50%, 2020 55%, 2019 60%. Age is counted as the assessment year minus the year of manufacture.

Worked example: VITZ HYBRID U (1,496cc), 2020

Step Amount
CRSP KSh 3,251,359
Depreciation (6 years) 55%
Customs value = CRSP ÷ 1.25 × (1 − 0.55) ÷ 1.35 ÷ 1.20 ÷ 1.16 KSh 622,866
Import duty 35% KSh 218,003
Excise duty 20% KSh 168,174
VAT 16% KSh 161,447
IDF 2.5% KSh 15,572
RDL 2% KSh 12,457
Total KRA taxes KSh 575,653

The customs value works backwards from the CRSP, which already includes duty, excise and VAT, so the 1.25, 1.35, excise and 1.16 divisors strip those out before the taxes are charged again on the declared value. Our CRSP explainer walks through why.

How to work out the import duty on Toyota Vitz yourself

  1. Get the exact model code and year of manufacture from the seller’s export certificate or auction sheet.
  2. Find the matching row and CRSP in KRA’s July 2025 list.
  3. Apply the depreciation for the car’s age.
  4. Pick the excise band: 20% up to 1,500cc; 25% for petrol 1,501-3,000cc or diesel 1,501-2,500cc; 35% above that.
  5. Compute customs value, then duty, excise, VAT, IDF and RDL as in the example.

The eight-year rule and the Vitz

KEBS standard KS 1515 bars used cars more than eight years from the year of first registration. In 2026 that means a Vitz first registered in 2019 or later. An older car is turned away at Mombasa whatever the tax. Details: KEBS eight-year rule.

Costs that are not KRA taxes

Freight from Japan or the UK, marine insurance, clearing agent fees, port storage after the free days, KEBS inspection, NTSA registration and number plates are extra and quoted by each provider; there is no single official rate card for most of them, so get written quotes. After arrival, budget for NTSA inspection fees where applicable and insurance (try the car insurance premium estimator). Financing? Use the car loan calculator.

Mistakes that raise the import duty on Toyota Vitz imports

  • Wrong model code. Clearing agents sometimes pick the closest-looking row; a higher-priced variant raises every tax line. Ask for the exact KRA row used.
  • Late year of manufacture. A car made in December but registered the next year is still aged by year of manufacture in KRA’s sheet.
  • Shipping too close to the cut-off. A 2019 car that arrives in 2027 falls outside the eight-year window and cannot be cleared.
  • Ignoring January. Depreciation steps up with the assessment year, so the same car can attract a different figure if it is assessed in a new year.

Buying a locally used Vitz instead

A Vitz already registered in Kenya has paid its duty. When you buy one, budget for the NTSA transfer instead: see how to transfer vehicle ownership on NTSA. KRA also auctions seized vehicles; see KRA car auctions.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the import duty on a Toyota Vitz in Kenya?

Total KRA taxes range from about KSh 511,691 (oldest allowed year, cheapest variant) to KSh 1,357,980 (2025 model, priciest variant) using the July 2025 CRSP.

Which year of Toyota Vitz can I import in 2026?

2019 or newer, because of the eight-year rule (KS 1515).

Is the CRSP the price I pay for the car?

No. CRSP is KRA’s reference value used to compute duty. Your purchase price, freight and clearing are separate.

Why is a hybrid Vitz taxed like petrol?

KRA lists hybrids under gasoline and taxes them by engine capacity in the same excise bands.
