Kenyans abroad send billions of shillings home every year, and a growing share lands directly in M-Pesa. Whether it is a relative in the UK or the Gulf, a client paying for freelance work or a friend refunding you, money can come straight to your M-Pesa wallet from many international services. Safaricom says receiving through its partners costs you nothing. This guide explains which services pay to M-Pesa, what the sender needs from you, how exchange rates work and how to stay safe.
Partners That Pay Into M-Pesa
Safaricom lists a wide range of international partners, including:
- Money transfer companies: Western Union, WorldRemit, MoneyGram, Remitly, Sendwave, Dahabshiil, Azimo, Transfer Galaxy and SkyForex.
- Online payment platforms: PayPal, Payoneer and Skrill.
- Banks and others: such as Post Finance.
- Mobile networks in the region: including Vodacom Tanzania, MTN Uganda, MTN Rwanda, Airtel Tanzania and MTN Zambia.
Partners change over time, so if a sender uses a service not listed here, ask them to check whether M-Pesa Kenya is available as a payout option in their app.
What the Sender Needs From You
- Your M-Pesa number in international format, starting with 254 and dropping the first zero. For example, 0712 345 678 becomes 254712345678.
- Your name exactly as registered on M-Pesa. Some services check that the name matches.
The sender chooses M-Pesa or mobile money in Kenya as the payout method in their app or at an agent, enters your details and pays.
What You Need
Only an active, registered M-Pesa line. Only registered customers can receive money from abroad. You do not need to visit an agent or fill in a form. When the money arrives, you get an SMS showing the amount in shillings and the sender.
Costs and Exchange Rates
| Who pays | What |
|---|---|
| You, the receiver | Nothing to receive |
| The sender | Their provider’s transfer fee |
| Exchange rate | Set by the sender’s provider |
Because providers set different fees and rates, the amount you receive can vary a lot between services for the same amount sent. Encourage regular senders to compare a few apps to see which delivers the most shillings to you.
Limits
Money received is subject to normal M-Pesa wallet limits, including the maximum balance your wallet can hold. If a large transfer would take your balance over the limit, it may fail. Move some money to savings, a bank or Ziidi beforehand if you are expecting a large amount.
For Freelancers and Remote Workers
If overseas clients pay you, PayPal and Payoneer can pay out to M-Pesa. PayPal works through the PayPal mini app on M-Pesa, which lets you withdraw your dollar balance to your wallet. Keep your client invoices and payout records for tax purposes, as income from abroad is still income. Looking for remote or local work? Browse JobinKenya.
Using the Money Wisely
- Save part of it. Put some into Ziidi or another money market fund so it earns interest.
- Avoid unnecessary withdrawals. Pay bills and merchants directly to save on withdrawal fees.
- Plan for school fees and rent by asking senders to send before due dates.
Helping Relatives Abroad Choose a Service
If a family member sends money home every month, a few minutes of comparison can save a lot over a year. Ask them to enter the same amount into two or three apps and note how many shillings each says you will receive. That single figure includes both the fee and the exchange rate, so it is the fairest way to compare. Some services also offer lower fees for the first transfer or for larger amounts.
Watch Out for Scams
Some fraudsters send fake messages claiming money has arrived from abroad, then ask you to send a fee to release it. Real international transfers to M-Pesa do not require you to pay anything to receive them. Always check your actual balance on the app or *334# before acting on any message.
