M-Pesa Global Explained: Sending and Receiving Money Abroad

M-Pesa Global Explained: Sending and Receiving Money Abroad

Updated 18 October 2026

M-Pesa Global turns your M-Pesa wallet into an international money transfer tool. It lets you send money from Kenya to people and bank accounts in other countries, and receive money from abroad directly into M-Pesa. It works through partners such as Western Union for sending and a long list of international services for receiving. This explainer covers what M-Pesa Global does, how much it costs, the limits, and how to choose between it and other options.

What You Can Do With M-Pesa Global

  • Send to Western Union locations worldwide for cash pickup by the recipient.
  • Send to bank accounts through Western Union in selected countries, including Germany, China and the UAE.
  • Send to China through Alipay, to a recipient’s mobile number or bank account.
  • Receive money from abroad free through partners including Western Union, WorldRemit, MoneyGram, Remitly, Sendwave, PayPal, Payoneer, Skrill and several African mobile networks.

Who Uses It

Parents paying fees for children studying overseas, families supporting relatives working in the Gulf or Europe, small traders paying suppliers in China and freelancers receiving client payments all use M-Pesa Global. Its main appeal is convenience: you can send or receive from your phone without visiting a bank.

Limits

Limit Amount
Minimum per transfer KSh 101
Maximum per transfer KSh 150,000
Daily limit KSh 300,000
Monthly limit (Western Union) KSh 1.5 million
Yearly limit (Western Union) KSh 18 million

Costs

Receiving money from abroad into M-Pesa costs you nothing. Sending abroad carries a transfer fee that depends on the amount, plus the exchange rate of the day. Both are shown before you confirm. For Western Union, the fee rises to KSh 500 at the top band. The exchange rate matters as much as the fee, so always check how much the recipient will receive in their currency.

How to Get Started

  1. Opt in once on *840#, *334# or the M-Pesa app.
  2. Choose how to send: Western Union pickup, Western Union bank deposit or Alipay.
  3. Enter the recipient’s details exactly as on their ID.
  4. Review the fee and exchange rate and confirm with your PIN.
  5. Share the reference, such as the Western Union MTCN, with the recipient.

M-Pesa Global or a Bank Transfer?

Factor M-Pesa Global Bank transfer
Convenience From your phone, any time Online banking or branch visit
Limits KSh 150,000 per transfer Usually higher
Best for Small and medium personal transfers Large payments, business invoices, tuition
Cash pickup Yes, through Western Union No

For university fees abroad, many institutions prefer bank transfers with clear references. For supporting family, M-Pesa Global’s speed and cash pickup are often more useful.

Practical Planning Tips

Plan international payments a few days before they are due. Transfers can be delayed by compliance checks, public holidays in the destination country or simple mistakes in names. If you pay fees or rent abroad on fixed dates, send early so there is time to fix any problem. Save frequent recipients in the menu to avoid spelling errors, and keep a record of every reference number.

For regular senders, it also helps to watch the exchange rate. The shilling moves against major currencies, and timing a large transfer for a day when the rate is better can make a noticeable difference. You do not need to predict the market. Simply checking the rate shown on screen on two or three days before a big payment gives you a better sense of what is normal.

Receiving Money: What to Tell Senders

When someone abroad wants to send you money, give them your number in the 254 format and your name exactly as it appears on M-Pesa. Ask them to choose M-Pesa Kenya as the payout. The money arrives in your wallet, usually within minutes, and you pay nothing to receive it.

Safety Tips

  • Never send money to someone you have only met online.
  • Be suspicious of overseas job offers that demand fees. Check recruiters with the National Employment Authority and search for genuine roles on JobinKenya.
  • Keep your MTCN private and share it only with the recipient.
  • Check your M-Pesa balance before reacting to any message claiming money has arrived.
