Kenyans living abroad often need a local bank account to pay school fees, support family, build a house or invest. Several Kenyan banks let you open a diaspora account without travelling home. This guide explains the documents banks usually ask for, how the remote process works at Equity Bank and KCB Bank, and what to think about before you choose an account.

Documents Banks Usually Ask For

  • Copy of your Kenyan national ID or passport.
  • KRA PIN certificate.
  • Recent passport photo.
  • Proof of address abroad, such as a utility bill or bank statement.
  • Signed account opening form and indemnity, which lets the bank act on instructions sent by email or fax.
  • FATCA form W-9 if you are a US citizen or resident.
  • For a foreign currency account at KCB, proof of foreign currency income, and notarised or certified copies of documents.

Requirements change, so confirm the latest list on the bank’s own website before you start. If you do not yet have a KRA PIN, you can apply online through iTax.

How Remote Opening Works

  1. Choose a bank and account. Compare fees, currencies and app features.
  2. Fill in the diaspora form. Equity and KCB both publish diaspora account opening pages and forms.
  3. Certify your documents. Some banks ask for copies certified by a notary or the Kenyan embassy.
  4. Submit online or by email. Equity’s Jijenge diaspora account accepts an online application with uploaded forms, but the original indemnity must be posted to the bank.
  5. Verification. The bank may call you to confirm details.
  6. Activate digital banking. Once the account is open, register for internet and mobile banking so you can operate it from abroad.

Opening at a Branch Instead

If you visit Kenya, you can also open the account in person at a branch with your original documents, which avoids certification and postage. Some people start the application online and finish it in person when they travel home.

Kenya Shilling or Foreign Currency?

Account type Good for Watch out for
KSh account Paying fees, bills and family in Kenya Exchange rate when money arrives
US dollar, pound or euro account Holding savings in the currency you earn Conversion charges when you spend locally
Both Choosing when to convert More accounts to manage

Moving Money Into the Account

You can fund the account by international bank transfer or through licensed money transfer services. Compare the total cost, which is the fee plus the exchange rate margin. Once money is in your account, you can pay bills in Kenya using bank paybill numbers or invest locally, for example by buying Treasury bills.

Questions to Ask the Bank

  • What monthly fees and minimum balances apply to the account?
  • What do incoming international transfers cost, and which exchange rate is used?
  • Can I get a debit card delivered abroad, or must someone collect it in Kenya?
  • How do I reset my mobile banking login if I lose my phone while abroad?
  • Can I open a joint account with a relative in Kenya, and what documents would they need?
  • Which channels can I use to give instructions, and which need the signed indemnity?

Get the answers in writing, by email, so you can compare banks fairly.

Tips Before You Open

  • Keep your Kenyan phone number active for bank verification codes, or register a foreign number the bank supports.
  • Name a trusted next of kin and update it when your life changes.
  • Give relatives limited access only. Avoid sharing your banking login.
  • Keep the account active so it does not become dormant.
  • If you plan to buy property, read our guide on whether Kenyans abroad and foreigners can buy land.
