Absa personal loan: limits, term and requirements

  • Amount: KSh 20,000 to KSh 6,000,000, with no collateral. Your income sets the maximum.
  • Repayment: up to 96 months, by debit order from your Absa account.
  • Scheme (check-off) loans: if your employer has a check-off agreement with Absa, repayments come straight from your salary. Permanent and contract staff qualify.
  • Credit life insurance comes with the loan; Absa describes it as affordable but does not publish the rate on the page.

Documents Absa lists: your most recent payslip, a signature on a white background, the credit life insurance documents and employer verification checklist, and a loan statement if you are buying out a loan from another lender. New customers also need a copy of their national ID and 3 months’ bank statements.

How to get a lower Absa loan rate

  1. Ask whether your employer has an Absa check-off scheme; scheme loans are lower risk for the bank.
  2. Clear any CRB listing before you apply.
  3. Ask for the Total Cost of Credit statement and compare it with at least two other banks.
  4. If you are moving a loan from another bank, bring the payoff statement and ask Absa to price the buy-out.

Branch and customer care details are in Absa paybill, SWIFT code and contacts.

How to read the Absa rate before you borrow

The figures above are what Absa filed on the Total Cost of Credit portal, the industry site where Kenyan banks publish their pricing. The “premium” is the margin Absa adds to the reference rate for each type of loan; the “lowest” and “highest” figures show the range it actually charges different borrowers. If the Central Bank Rate changes at a Monetary Policy Committee meeting, a variable loan rate usually moves with it, so a loan priced at CBR plus a fixed premium can get cheaper or dearer during its life. Always ask whether your rate is fixed or variable, and get the full cost in writing before you sign.
