KCB M-Pesa gives you access to small one month loans and savings straight from your M-Pesa menu. There is no branch visit and no paperwork. This guide walks you through activating the account, requesting a loan, repaying it, opening a Target Savings account and fixing the problems people most often face, such as a zero limit.

Who Can Apply

  • Safaricom M-Pesa customers with a line registered in their own name.
  • Customers who have used M-Pesa for some time. Very new lines may not qualify for loans immediately.
  • People with a valid ID matching their M-Pesa registration.

Step 1: Activate KCB M-Pesa

  1. Open the M-Pesa menu on your SIM toolkit or the M-Pesa app.
  2. Go to Loans and Savings, then KCB M-Pesa.
  3. Choose to activate the account.
  4. Read and accept the terms and conditions.
  5. Enter your M-Pesa PIN. You receive an SMS confirming activation.

Step 2: Request a Loan

  1. Open M-Pesa, Loans and Savings, KCB M-Pesa.
  2. Select Loan, then Request Loan.
  3. Enter an amount within your limit.
  4. Read the fee shown on screen.
  5. Enter your M-Pesa PIN. The money arrives in your M-Pesa wallet.

The loan is due in one month. The fee is shown before you confirm, so you always know the full amount you will repay.

Step 3: Repay the Loan

  1. Open KCB M-Pesa on your menu.
  2. Select Loan, then Pay Loan.
  3. Choose payment from M-Pesa and enter the amount.
  4. Confirm with your PIN.

You can repay the full amount at once or in instalments before the due date.

Step 4: Open Target Savings

  1. Go to KCB M-Pesa, Fixed Savings, Target Savings.
  2. Select Open Account.
  3. Set a target above KSh 1,000 and a period of one to 12 months.
  4. Make your first deposit of at least KSh 50.

Why Your Limit Might Be Zero

  • Your line is new or has little M-Pesa activity.
  • You have an unpaid loan with KCB M-Pesa or a poor repayment history.
  • You have a negative credit record with credit reference bureaus.
  • Your registration details do not match your ID.

Use M-Pesa regularly, save in KCB M-Pesa and clear any old debts. Check your record using our guide to checking your CRB status.

Before You Borrow

A one month loan is useful for short gaps, like waiting for a salary or a customer payment. It becomes a problem if you borrow to repay other loans or to cover regular expenses every month. If you find yourself borrowing every month, look at your budget first. Compare the cost with Fuliza, which charges daily and suits very short gaps, and with M-Shwari.

Planning Your Repayment

Before you confirm a loan, decide exactly where the repayment will come from and on which date. If you are waiting for a salary, note the payday and make sure it falls before the due date. If you are a trader, estimate how many days of sales it will take to cover the repayment and keep that money aside as it comes in. Writing the plan down, even in a phone note, makes it much more likely you repay on time.

What Happens If You Pay Late

If you miss the due date, KCB may recover the money from your KCB M-Pesa savings or your M-Pesa wallet, your limit can drop, and the default can be reported to credit reference bureaus. A negative listing makes it harder to borrow from banks, SACCOs and even some employers who run checks. If you are struggling, repay what you can and contact KCB early.

Building a Better Limit Over Time

Limits on mobile loans are set by automated scoring, so consistency matters more than any single action. Keep money moving through your M-Pesa, because regular income and payments show activity. Save a little in KCB M-Pesa every month, even small amounts. Borrow modest amounts and repay them early. Over several months these habits usually lead to a higher limit. Avoid borrowing from many digital lenders at the same time, since multiple active loans can count against you when lenders check your credit history.
