Updated 24 October 2026
Kenyan freelancers lose part of every dollar they earn between the platform and their phone. How much depends on the route. Upwork can pay straight into M-Pesa, while Fiverr has no M-Pesa option and needs PayPal or Payoneer in between. This guide lays out each route with the fees the companies publish, so you can see where the money goes and choose the cheapest path for your situation.
All fees below come from the platforms’ own help pages as checked on 24 October 2026. Platforms change their pricing, so confirm the figure shown in your account before each withdrawal.
Upwork to M-Pesa: One Step
Upwork offers M-Pesa as a “direct to wallet” withdrawal method for freelancers whose profile country is Kenya. Its fees and timing page sets out three points:
- Fee: Upwork charges a withdrawal fee that varies by wallet. It does not print a Kenya figure on that page; the amount appears when you add M-Pesa or confirm a withdrawal.
- Exchange rate: you receive shillings at a rate that already includes Upwork’s currency conversion cost, and no separate conversion fee is deducted.
- Speed: most withdrawals arrive within minutes. If it takes more than 24 hours, Upwork asks you to check with your wallet provider and then contact support.
The setup page adds that a new method activates after three days and that your names must match on Upwork and M-Pesa. Withdrawal limits vary by wallet and are shown when you withdraw, so a large balance may need more than one transfer.
Hidden cost to watch: the conversion margin. Because it is built into the rate, compare the shillings you receive with the Central Bank of Kenya’s published exchange rate for that day. CBK’s indicative rate on 23 October 2026 was KSh 129.89 to the US dollar.
Fiverr to M-Pesa: Two Steps
Fiverr’s payout methods table lists these options:
| Fiverr payout method | Fiverr fee | Minimum | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| PayPal | $0 | $1 | 24 hours |
| Bank transfer via Payoneer | $1 | $20 | 1 to 3 business days (local currency) |
| Payoneer account | $3 | $10 | Up to 2 business days |
| Fiverr Revenue Card | $1 to $3 | $30 | Existing cardholders only |
Fiverr also enforces waiting periods: 24 hours after your first withdrawal, 24 hours after adding or changing a payout method and 48 hours after changing your verified phone number. The maximum is $5,000 per transaction.
Option A: Fiverr to PayPal to M-Pesa
Fiverr charges nothing to send to PayPal. From there, Safaricom’s M-Pesa PayPal service moves the balance to your phone with a 3% conversion fee, applied at the exchange rate on the day. That makes the total cost on this route roughly 3% plus any rate difference. Our guide to withdrawing PayPal to M-Pesa covers the linking steps inside the M-Pesa app.
Option B: Fiverr to Payoneer to a Kenyan Bank, Then M-Pesa
Payoneer explains on its withdrawal fees page that withdrawing to a local bank account in a different currency costs up to 2%, and that your bank may add its own processing or landing fees. Once the shillings are in your bank, moving them to M-Pesa costs whatever your bank charges for bank-to-M-Pesa transfers. Those charges differ by bank; see, for example, our list of Stanbic to M-Pesa transfer charges.
Fiverr’s own $1 bank-transfer fee makes this route better value on larger, less frequent withdrawals. For small amounts, the flat fees take a bigger share.
A Worked Example: $200 From Each Platform
Take a freelancer withdrawing $200. On Fiverr via PayPal, Fiverr takes $0 and Safaricom’s 3% fee is $6, so about $194 worth of shillings reaches M-Pesa before any exchange-rate gap. On Fiverr via Payoneer to a bank, Fiverr takes $1 and Payoneer up to 2% of the remaining $199 (up to about $3.98), so roughly $195 or a little more reaches the bank before bank charges and the cost of moving it to M-Pesa. On Upwork, the fee is whatever your account shows for M-Pesa, plus the conversion margin built into the rate. These sums are our own illustration using the published percentages; your actual amount depends on the rate on the day.
Which Route Is Cheapest?
- Upwork users: withdraw straight to M-Pesa. It is the only one-step route and usually the fastest.
- Fiverr users who withdraw small amounts often: PayPal then M-Pesa avoids flat fees eating into small sums.
- Fiverr users who withdraw larger amounts: compare the Payoneer bank route, which can come out slightly cheaper than 3% if your bank’s charges are low.
Whichever you use, keep the confirmation messages. Freelance income is taxable in Kenya, and those records show what you earned and what you paid to receive it. If you are still choosing a platform, our guide to online jobs that pay via M-Pesa in 2026 explains which kind of work suits each one.
