HELB Loan Repayment Calculator 2026: Estimate Your Monthly Instalment

Enter your outstanding HELB balance and how many years you plan to take to repay. The calculator estimates a monthly instalment using HELB’s 4% annual interest on undergraduate loans and adds the KES 1,000 yearly ledger fee. For your exact billing, HELB asks loanees to request a billing schedule.

Estimate only. Rates checked 13 Oct 2026.

Key HELB repayment rules

  • Interest: 4% a year on undergraduate loans.
  • Ledger fee: KES 1,000 a year, charged for maintaining your account.
  • When to start: repayment starts within one year after you complete your studies.
  • Default: HELB fines at least KES 5,000 for each month that remains unpaid.
  • Employer non-remittance: an employer that deducts but does not remit is charged 5% a month on each unpaid deduction.

How to repay

HELB accepts repayment through employer check-off (tell your employer to start monthly deductions) or individual payments by bank deposit, card, cheque or M-PESA. From abroad, HELB lists payment by card or direct transfer to account 300 040 012 at Citibank Nairobi (SWIFT CITIKENA). Statements can be downloaded from the HELB portal or app, and USSD *642# is also available.

How the estimate works

The calculator treats your balance as a reducing-balance loan at 4% a year over the period you choose, then adds the ledger fee for each year. HELB’s own computation may differ, and any penalties already on your account are not included. Clearing your loan earlier reduces both the interest and the number of ledger fees you pay.

After you clear the loan

Request a clearance certificate through the HELB portal, or visit a Huduma Centre or HELB’s office at Anniversary Towers. If you overpay, submit a loan inquiry form and confirmation that your employer has stopped deductions; HELB says refunds take about 60 days.
