eCitizen is the Kenyan government’s main online platform for public services. Through one account you can apply for passports, good conduct certificates, business names, driving licences, birth and death certificates, KUCCPS payments, land services and much more. With thousands of services now on the platform, being able to log in reliably has become essential. This guide explains how to log in, how two step verification works, how to reset a forgotten password, how to update your details and how to avoid fake eCitizen sites.

Before You Log In

  • You need an existing account. If you do not have one, follow our guide to create an eCitizen account.
  • Have your ID number and password ready.
  • Have access to the email address and phone number linked to the account, because one time codes are sent there.

Step by Step: Logging In

  1. Type the official address, ecitizen.go.ke, into your browser yourself. Avoid links sent by SMS or social media.
  2. Click the login button. You are taken to the central accounts page.
  3. Enter your ID number, or the identifier you registered with, and your password.
  4. If two step verification is on, enter the one time code sent to your phone or email.
  5. Once logged in, open the service you need from the dashboard or the list of agencies.

Two Step Verification

eCitizen uses one time codes to confirm it is really you. The code is valid only for a short time. If it expires, request a new one. If codes never arrive, check that your phone has network, that your inbox is not full and that the code has not gone to spam. If your phone number or email has changed, you will need to update it, which is explained below.

How to Reset a Forgotten Password

  1. On the login page, click Forgot Password.
  2. Enter your ID number or the email linked to your account.
  3. Follow the reset link or code sent to your registered email or phone.
  4. Set a new strong password and log in again.

Choose a password you do not use on other sites, combining letters, numbers and symbols. Save it in a secure place.

Updating Your Phone Number or Email

Once logged in, open your profile or account settings to update contact details. If you cannot log in because the old number or email is no longer yours, contact eCitizen support through the official help channels or visit a Huduma Centre with your ID. Staff can help verify your identity and update your account.

What You Can Do Once Logged In

Service area Examples
Immigration Passport applications, visas and permits
Police Certificate of good conduct
Business Business name search and registration, company services
Transport Driving licences and vehicle services through NTSA
Civil registration Birth and death certificates
Education KUCCPS and HELB related payments

Paying for Services

Most services generate an invoice that you pay through M-Pesa, Airtel Money, card or bank. Pay only using the details on the official invoice. If a payment does not reflect, wait a few minutes, then use the option to confirm payment on the invoice. Our guide to eCitizen payments not reflecting covers common fixes.

Bookmark the official page on your phone so you always open the real site with one tap.

Staying Safe

  • Only use addresses ending in go.ke.
  • Never share login codes with anyone, including people who say they work for the government.
  • Log out after using shared computers.
  • Be careful with cyber cafe operators who ask to keep your password. Change it afterwards if you had to share it.
  • Watch out for fake sites that charge extra fees for free government services.

If several family members use one phone, make sure each person has their own account and that codes go to the right owner.

Common Problems

Account locked after many attempts. Wait for the lock to clear, then reset your password.

Page not loading. Try a different browser, clear your cache or try later when traffic is lower.

Wrong details on account. Contact eCitizen support or a Huduma Centre to correct them.
