How to Join Imarisha Sacco

You can apply online through the account opening and membership section of the Sacco’s website, or start by dialling *451#.

  1. Open the membership page on the Imarisha website.
  2. Fill in the form and attach the required documents.
  3. Submit, then pay the entrance fee and the minimum share capital.
  4. If you get stuck, call 0709 578 000.

Fees

The membership page lists an entrance fee of KSh 360 for both Class A and Class B members. It also gives a minimum share capital of KSh 30,000, but the same line describes this as 500 shares of KSh 20, which would come to KSh 10,000. Because the two figures don’t match, confirm the current share capital requirement with the call centre or the Sacco’s tariff guide before you pay.

Documents for a savings account

  • National ID card.
  • KRA PIN certificate.
  • Passport photo, taken free when you open the account.

Imarisha BOSA Loans

Most BOSA loans are capped at three times the deposits you hold, so building deposits is the key to borrowing more. The Sacco advertises loan rates from as low as 1% a month on a reducing balance and deposit-based loans of up to five times deposits for some products. Rates for each loan are not listed product by product, so ask for the rate and total cost before you sign.

BOSA loan Maximum amount Repayment period Notes
Development (normal) loan 3 times deposits 48 months Open to all members
Premium loan 3 times deposits 60 months 1.5% premium interest taken up front
Re-finance loan As appraised 48 months For members refinancing existing loans
Education (school fees) loan 3 times deposits 20 months Secondary, college or university fees
Emergency loan As appraised Up to 12 months Burials, calamities, court orders; other loans must be up to date
Introductory loan KSh 200,000 48 months New salaried members; one third goes to your deposits
Sky loan 3 times deposits 72 months Repaid from annual dividends and interest
Sky Poa loan 3 times deposits 72 months Needs at least KSh 300,000 in BOSA deposits
Karibu loan Not published 12 months Ask the branch
Ideal loan Not published 84 months Ask the branch
Take-Off loan Not published 84 months Ask the branch
Superior loan Not published 96 months Ask the branch

Imarisha FOSA Loans and Advances

FOSA products are for members whose salary is paid through an Imarisha FOSA account. They are quicker than BOSA loans but shorter.

FOSA product How much Repayment Interest stated
Short-term advance Up to 90% of net salary 1 month 10%
Long-term advance Up to 4 times net salary 6 months 14%
Inua loan Up to 5 times FOSA non-withdrawable deposits 24 months 14% a year
Daraja loan Up to 3 times FOSA non-withdrawable deposits 36 months 14% a year

The website gives the short-term and long-term advance rates without saying whether they are flat or per year. Over one month, a 10% charge is expensive, so treat these advances as a last resort and compare with a normal loan first. Lenders also check your credit record, so check your CRB status before applying.

Savings Accounts

  • Savings account: deposits and withdrawals at any time, with interest paid once a year. Salaries and farm proceeds can be paid in, which qualifies you for salary advances and Inua and Daraja loans. A cheque book is available on request.
  • Fixed deposit: minimum KSh 20,000 for at least one month, at a negotiable rate.
  • Parrot account (children): for ages 1 to 18, opened with KSh 1,000. It earns interest once the balance passes KSh 5,000, allows three withdrawals a year and has no ledger fee.
  • FOSA Senior Citizen account: KSh 500 a month minimum, locked until retirement, earning yearly interest.

Ask for the welfare rules in writing, as contributions and eligibility conditions are not set out on the website. Before putting big sums in any Sacco, read our piece on the risks and rewards of investing in Saccos.
