Updated 21 October 2026

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) runs several online portals rather than one website, and most login problems come from using the wrong one. Schools register candidates on one portal, upload competency based assessment scores on another, examiners and supervisors manage their contracts on a third, and candidates check results on separate results pages. This guide explains each KNEC portal, who it is for, how login works and what to do when you cannot get in.

  1. The Main KNEC Portals

The Main KNEC Portals

Portal Address Main users What it does
KNEC Portal gateway knec-portal.ac.ke Schools Entry point for primary and junior school CBA services and secondary school KCSE services
CBA Portal cba.knec.ac.ke Primary and junior schools Assessment registration, uploading school based assessment scores and downloading results
Contracted Professionals (CP2) cp2.knec.ac.ke Teachers and other professionals Applying for and managing roles such as examiner, supervisor and invigilator
KCSE Results Checker results.knec.ac.ke KCSE candidates Checking KCSE results after release
KJSEA Results kjsea.knec.ac.ke Parents and Grade 9 learners Checking KJSEA results after release
Query Management System (QMIS) qmis.knec.ac.ke Members of the public Online service requests and queries to KNEC

Always type these addresses yourself. Every one ends in .ac.ke, the domain used by Kenyan academic institutions. Pages on other domains that ask for your details or a payment are not KNEC.

For Secondary Schools: KCSE Services

On the gateway at knec-portal.ac.ke, the secondary schools section covers KCSE candidate registration, projects and the qualifying test registration. Schools log in with the institution credentials KNEC issued to the centre. These belong to the school, so the principal or the officer in charge of examinations should keep them safe and change the password if staff change. Typical tasks are:

  • Registering KCSE candidates during the registration window and confirming their details.
  • Uploading passport photos that meet KNEC’s size rules. Our free KNEC passport photo resizer prepares photos in your browser.
  • Uploading or downloading project data for subjects with project work.
  • Downloading the school’s results after release.

For Primary and Junior Schools: The CBA Portal

Under the competency based curriculum, schools use the CBA portal for KPSEA and KJSEA registration and to upload school based assessment scores across the grades. When the 2025 KJSEA results came out, KNEC told heads of institutions to log into the CBA portal, open the Results menu and use the download link to get their institution’s results. Head teachers should make sure the right staff member has access before each upload window, since KNEC sets deadlines for uploading scores.

For Examiners, Supervisors and Invigilators: CP2

The Contracted Professionals portal is where teachers and other professionals apply for and manage roles in national examinations. The login page offers returning users a sign in, plus options to create an account or reset a password, and KNEC provides a downloadable user manual on the same page. Use it to keep your profile, bank details and contact details current, since contracts and payments depend on them. KNEC also states on the page that personal data is collected for managing examinations in line with the Data Protection Act.

For Candidates and Parents: Results Pages

Candidates do not log in to the school portals. Instead they use the results checkers, which open when results are officially released. For KCSE, last year’s candidates entered their index number and registered name on results.knec.ac.ke. For KJSEA, parents entered the learner’s assessment number and at least one registered name on kjsea.knec.ac.ke. Before the release date these pages may show nothing, which is normal.

For Everyone Else: QMIS

The Query Management Information System is KNEC’s online services portal for queries and requests. You sign in with a KNEC QMS account, or choose the option to continue with eCitizen. New users can register, and a forgotten password can be reset by entering your registered email address, after which KNEC sends your login details. If you do not have an eCitizen account, you can create an eCitizen account first.

Step by Step: Logging In to a KNEC Portal

  1. Decide which portal you need using the table above.
  2. Type the address into your browser and check it ends in .ac.ke.
  3. Enter the username or identifier for that portal. Schools use institution credentials, CP2 users use their own account, and QMIS users use their email or eCitizen.
  4. Enter your password and sign in.
  5. Open the menu for the task you need, such as registration, results or contracts.
  6. Log out when you finish, especially on a shared school or cyber cafe computer.

Fixing Common Login Problems

  • Wrong portal. A CP2 account will not open the school portal, and school credentials will not open CP2.
  • Forgotten password. Use the reset option on CP2 or QMIS. For school portals, contact the KNEC officer at your sub-county or KNEC directly, because the credentials belong to the institution.
  • Portal slow or not loading. Traffic peaks around registration deadlines and results releases. Try early in the morning or late at night.
  • Page will not submit. Clear your browser cache, try another browser and check that uploads meet the size limits.

Stay Safe

KNEC portals do not ask candidates to pay agents, send money to personal numbers or share passwords on WhatsApp. Never give a school login to anyone outside the examinations office. Report suspicious links or pages to KNEC through its official contacts.
