How to choose

  • Cheapest money: if you have savings, the Loan Within Savings at 0.8% a month (about 9.6% a year at simple rates) is the lowest-cost product. Your own savings are the security.
  • Long projects: Elite gives you 7 years, but only if your main savings are at least KSh 1 million. Otherwise Premier gives you 5 years at the same 1.25% a month.
  • Emergencies: Express (1.2% a month, 24-hour processing) costs far less than M-Loan (7% a month) or Jibambe (5% a month).
  • Chamas: the Chamaz Loan at 14% a year. Compare it with bank options in our best banks for chamas guide.

What the rates cost: an example

Here is our own estimate using standard amortisation, not a Sacco quote. KSh 500,000 on the Premier Loan at 1.25% a month over 60 months costs about KSh 11,900 a month and roughly KSh 214,000 in total interest. A KSh 500,000 Loan Within Savings at 0.8% a month over 48 months costs about KSh 12,600 a month and roughly KSh 104,000 in interest, less than half as much. If your savings can cover it, borrowing against them is much cheaper.
