Airtel Money comes built into every Airtel line in Kenya, but you need to activate it before you can send money, pay bills or withdraw cash. Activation takes about a minute on your phone. This guide explains how to activate Airtel Money, why the security question matters, the ID rules at agents, how to reset a forgotten PIN and the first things worth doing once your wallet is live.

Why Many Kenyans Add Airtel Money

Airtel Money has grown quickly because sending money from one Airtel Money user to another is free, and because Airtel Money can now pay M-Pesa tills and paybills directly. Many people keep an Airtel line as a second SIM, and an active Airtel Money wallet gives them a cheaper option for some transactions and a backup when another network is down. Compare the two services in our M-Pesa versus Airtel Money comparison.

What You Need

  • An Airtel line registered in your name. If your SIM is not registered, visit an Airtel shop or agent with your original ID first.
  • Your original National ID or Kenyan passport for agent transactions.
  • Any phone. Activation uses USSD, so you do not need a smartphone or data.

How to Activate Airtel Money on Your Phone

  1. Dial *334# on your Airtel line.
  2. Follow the prompt to set a four digit PIN.
  3. Enter the PIN again to confirm it.
  4. Choose one security question from the list.
  5. Type your answer and confirm.
  6. You receive a message confirming that Airtel Money is active.

Write your security answer somewhere safe and private, or choose an answer you will never forget. You may need it later to reset your PIN.

Using Airtel Money at an Agent

To deposit or withdraw at an Airtel Money agent, carry your original National ID or Kenyan passport. Agents are required to see the original document, and copies or photos are not accepted. Deposits are free. Withdrawals carry a fee that depends on the amount, listed in our guide to Airtel Money withdrawal charges.

How to Reset a Forgotten Airtel Money PIN

  1. Dial *334#.
  2. Choose the reset or forgot PIN option.
  3. If your balance is KSh 1,000 or below, you can set a new four digit PIN straight away.
  4. If your balance is above KSh 1,000, you are asked the security question you set during activation. Answer it correctly to set a new PIN.

If you cannot remember the answer, contact Airtel customer care or visit an Airtel shop with your original ID.

  4. Learn cross network sending with our guide to sending from Airtel Money to M-Pesa.

Airtel Money Limits

Airtel Money has limits on how much you can send in one transaction, how much you can move in a day and how much your wallet can hold. Airtel publishes the current figures on its website and in the *334# menu, and they are reviewed from time to time in line with Central Bank of Kenya rules, so check them before planning a big transfer. The limits apply to every Airtel Money customer, whatever bundle or plan you use. If a large payment fails, check whether you have hit one of these limits before calling customer care. For business sized payments, splitting across two days or using a bank transfer may be better.

Security Tips

  • Never share your PIN or security answer with anyone, including callers who claim to be Airtel staff.
  • Use a different PIN from your M-Pesa and bank cards.
  • Check your balance before refunding any money someone claims to have sent by mistake.
  • Report a lost phone to Airtel immediately so your line can be blocked.
