Airtel Money listing: the key numbers

Item Figure
Offer price £1.96 per share
Market value at offer price About £5.3 billion (US$7.0 billion)
Shares sold 270 million existing shares, plus up to 27 million over-allotment shares
Total offer size Up to £582 million, about 11% of the company
Total shares 2.7 billion

All the shares were sold by existing shareholders, so Airtel Money did not raise new money for itself. The final offer details show the International Finance Corporation, part of the World Bank Group, was a cornerstone investor, committing up to £67.2 million (about US$90 million). Airtel Africa plc stays the controlling shareholder and says it will remain a long-term strategic owner.

How the shares traded

Reuters, via CNBC Africa, reported that the shares opened flat on October 9 and rose as much as 2% to about £2. The offer was several times oversubscribed and raised about US$703 million for the selling shareholders. Dealogic data showed it was London’s largest IPO since September 2025.

Airtel Money’s size

Launched in 2011 as the mobile money arm of Airtel Africa, Airtel Money serves about 53 million monthly active users in 13 African countries through more than 2.3 million agents, the London Stock Exchange said. Its services include transfers, merchant payments, savings, loans and international remittances.

What it means for Kenyan users

For everyday users in Kenya, nothing changes immediately. Your wallet, PIN, balances and charges are not affected by the listing. Airtel Money in Kenya remains regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya, and customer funds are held in trust accounts as required by the National Payment System rules. Over time, being a separately listed company with its own investors could push Airtel Money to grow faster and compete harder with M-Pesa on fees, merchant payments and credit. Compare the two today in our guide to M-Pesa vs Airtel Money, or see how to register Airtel Money.

Competition in Kenya is uneven. Safaricom’s M-Pesa holds the large majority of mobile money subscriptions, according to Communications Authority data. Airtel has been investing in its network, including a KSh8.4bn 5G spectrum purchase, which helps its wider offer.

Can Kenyans buy Airtel Money shares?

The retail part of the offer was open only to people living in the United Kingdom, with a £250 minimum. Now that the shares are trading, a Kenyan investor would need a broker that offers access to London-listed stocks. Some Kenyan stockbrokers and international trading apps offer this, but check that the platform is licensed by the Capital Markets Authority, and remember that you take on pound sterling currency risk and foreign fees. Airtel Money is not listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

Insiders are restricted from selling: the company and existing shareholders agreed to a 180-day lock-up, and directors to 365 days.
