YouTube tax Kenya: the 5% rate in plain terms

KRA lists digital content monetisation on its withholding tax page, effective from 1 July 2023: 5% for residents and 20% for non-residents. Google’s YouTube Help page for Kenya confirms that, under the Income Tax Act, Google withholds 5% Kenya tax on finalised YouTube earnings for AdSense for YouTube accounts based in Kenya, alongside any applicable US taxes.

Withholding tax is deducted at source and remitted to KRA. For residents, KRA states that withholding tax is usually not a final tax: you declare the income and the withholding certificate when you file your individual return and pay any balance due. Winnings, qualifying interest, qualifying dividends and pensions are among the cases where withholding can be final for residents; digital content monetisation is not listed in that final-tax group on the same KRA page.

What counts as digital content monetisation

The Finance Act, 2023 inserted a definition into the Income Tax Act. It covers offering entertainment, social, literary, artistic, educational or other material electronically for payment, including:

  • Ads on websites or social platforms and brand endorsements
  • Sponsorships for content creation and promotion
  • Affiliate marketing commissions when viewers click products
  • Subscriptions and membership programmes
  • Merchandise, e-books, courses or software sales tied to the creator
  • Licensing photos, music or other content
  • Commissions or fees from crowdfunding

So YouTube Partner Programme revenue sits inside a wider creator-tax net that can also touch TikTok, brand deals and affiliate income. For how Kenyan creators get paid off other platforms, see how to move Upwork and Fiverr earnings to M-Pesa and how to make money on TikTok in Kenya.

How Google withholds YouTube tax Kenya

According to YouTube Help (checked October 2026):

  1. Google withholds 5% Kenya tax each month on finalised YouTube earnings for Kenya-based AdSense accounts.
  2. The first application is to September 2026 earnings paid out in October 2026.
  3. You must submit your 11-character Kenyan PIN in AdSense for YouTube (ALL CAPS, no hyphens; individuals start with A, entities with P).
  4. If a verified PIN is missing, earnings still accrue but payments may stop until the PIN is approved (review often takes 3–5 business days).
  5. Google reports to KRA the gross payments subject to withholding, the amount withheld, your PIN and address.

Worked example using KRA’s resident rate (illustrative only): if finalised YouTube earnings subject to withholding are KSh 100,000, Kenya withholding at 5% is KSh 5,000, leaving KSh 95,000 before any other deductions such as US tax. Your final income-tax bill after filing can be higher or lower than the amount already withheld.

Steps to submit your KRA PIN in AdSense

From YouTube Help:

  1. Sign in to AdSense for YouTube.
  2. Open Payments → Payments info → Manage settings.
  3. Under Payments profile, edit Kenya tax info → Manage tax info.
  4. Enter the PIN in the required format and submit.

Keep your iTax profile email working so withholding certificates can reach you when payers remit. If you need KRA contact routes, use our KRA Contact Centre guide. Annual return: why 5% is rarely the end of the story

KRA’s withholding page is clear for residents: after the payer remits, you still file. Declare the YouTube (and other) income, attach or enter withholding details, and settle any balance. Non-residents without a permanent establishment generally face final withholding at the non-resident rate.

Creators who also run a site or shop often need hosting and a domain. You can compare plans on Truehost (affiliate link) if you are building a creator website alongside AdSense.

Checklist before the next payout

  • Confirm AdSense country/settings match a Kenya-based account if that is your situation.
  • Submit and verify the KRA PIN before the payment hold risk bites.
  • Save monthly AdSense statements and any KRA withholding certificates.
  • Separate US tax forms from Kenya PIN requirements — YouTube treats them as different processes.
  • Budget for a possible extra tax bill at return time if your marginal rate exceeds 5%.

Frequently asked questions

Is YouTube tax Kenya a new tax in 2026?

No. KRA’s 5% resident / 20% non-resident withholding on digital content monetisation has applied from 1 July 2023. What changed in 2026 is Google’s operational withholding and PIN collection for Kenya-based AdSense for YouTube accounts, starting with September 2026 earnings paid in October.

Is the 5% YouTube tax Kenya deduction a final tax for residents?

On KRA’s withholding tax page, withholding is final for residents only in listed cases such as winnings, qualifying interest, qualifying dividends and pensions. Digital content monetisation is not in that list, so residents should expect to declare the income on the annual return and credit the tax already withheld.

What happens if I do not submit my KRA PIN?

YouTube Help says earnings continue to accrue, but payments may be held until a verified PIN is provided.

Does TikTok income face the same YouTube tax Kenya rules?

The Income Tax Act definition of digital content monetisation is platform-agnostic. The KRA withholding rates for digital content monetisation are the same categories (5% resident / 20% non-resident). How each platform collects tax information is separate; always check that platform’s notice and KRA’s current table.

Where do I read the official rates?

Use KRA’s withholding tax page for the rate table and YouTube Help for Google’s PIN and withholding process. Link both from your own records when you file.
