Safaricom’s 5G network now reaches about 30% of Kenya’s population, according to the company’s 2026 annual report. That is up from 14% in August 2024. Coverage is concentrated in towns, so whether you get 5G depends on where you live and work and on whether your phone supports it. This guide covers how far the network reaches, how to check your exact location, which phones work and what you need to switch on.

If you came here for prices, our separate guide sets out Safaricom 5G Home packages, speeds and router costs.

How Big Is Safaricom’s 5G Network?

Safaricom reports its 5G footprint in base stations, the cell sites that carry the signal. Its FY26 results booklet, published on 7 May 2026, gives these figures for Safaricom Kenya:

Network Base stations, March 2026 March 2025
5G 1,879 1,700
4G 7,524 6,937
3G 7,536 6,970
2G 7,540 6,973

The gap tells the story: 5G runs on roughly one site for every four 4G sites. The annual report puts 4G population coverage at 97.9%, so outside 5G zones your phone drops back to 4G, which covers nearly everywhere.

In an August 2024 announcement, Safaricom said its 1,114 sites at the time covered 102 towns and that 5G was available in all 47 counties. “Available in a county” usually means the main town or towns, not the whole county. Safaricom has not published an updated town list since then.

How to Check 5G Coverage at Your Address

Safaricom’s 5G FAQ sends customers to its Home internet site, internet.safaricom.co.ke, to check coverage. Enter your location there before you buy a 5G router or a 5G phone for home use. Coverage can change from one street to the next, especially indoors.

Two practical checks help:

  • With a 5G phone, watch the network indicator at home, at work and on your commute. If it shows 5G only near windows, a 5G router may struggle indoors.
  • Ask neighbours or colleagues on Safaricom with 5G phones what they see. Real use in your building is more useful than a map.

Note that the FAQ page itself still says 5G is in “28 towns across 21 counties”, a line from the early rollout that the company’s later figures have overtaken.

Which Phones Work With Safaricom 5G?

Your phone must have a 5G modem. Safaricom’s FAQ says phones that support 5G are made by brands including Apple, Samsung, Nokia, Huawei and Oppo, and that Safaricom shops stock 5G phones. Within each brand, only certain models support 5G, so check the exact model rather than the brand.

To check the phone you already own:

  • iPhone: open Settings, then Mobile Data (or Cellular), then Mobile Data Options, then Voice & Data. If you see 5G Auto or 5G On, the phone supports 5G. iPhone 12 and later models have 5G.
  • Android: open Settings, then Network or Connections, then Mobile network, then Preferred network type. A 5G option means the phone supports it. Menu names differ slightly between brands.

If no 5G option appears, the phone is 4G only. It will keep working normally on Safaricom’s network, which the FAQ confirms for 2G, 3G and 4G devices.

Do You Need a New SIM for 5G?

No. Safaricom’s FAQ says your normal SIM card works on 5G. You need three things: a 5G phone, a location with 5G coverage and the 5G setting switched on. Safaricom also says 5G phones are backward compatible, so they fall back to 4G or 3G outside 5G zones.

What You Can Do With 5G

Safaricom sells two kinds of 5G service. The first is mobile data on a 5G phone, using the same bundles you already buy. The second is 5G Wi-Fi for homes and businesses, which uses a 5G router with its own SIM and a monthly plan. The home plans compete with fibre in areas where fibre has not arrived. If your street already has fibre, our Safaricom app and data bundles FAQ and the 5G packages guide above will help you compare.

The Bottom Line

5G covers about three in ten Kenyans and added 179 sites in the year to March 2026. If you live in a major town and already own a recent phone, you may have 5G today without spending anything: switch the setting on and check the indicator. Before paying for a 5G router or upgrading your phone for 5G alone, confirm coverage at your exact address first.
