How to Join Unaitas Sacco

Any Kenyan aged 18 or over can join. The Sacco offers two levels of membership, and the difference comes down to how many shares you buy. Each share costs KSh 10.

Membership level Minimum shares Cost
Customer member 10 shares KSh 100
Full member 100 shares KSh 1,000

The website gives two different caps on how many shares one member can hold: 2,000,000 shares (KSh 20 million) on the investment shares page and 1,000,000 shares (KSh 10 million) in the FAQs. Ask your branch which applies before buying a large block.

Documents you need

  • National ID or valid passport, plus a certified copy.
  • Copy of your KRA PIN certificate.
  • Certified copy of a utility bill or tenancy agreement.
  • A passport photo, which the branch takes for free.
  • For groups, an introduction letter from the Ministry of Social Services.

Steps

  1. Visit any branch and go to the customer care desk.
  2. Fill in the account opening form. The officer opens the account in the system while you wait.
  3. Pay for your shares with the cashier, or pay the membership fee through M-Pesa paybill 544700.
  4. Your account is then ready for deposits, withdrawals and transfers.

Shares vs Deposits at Unaitas

New members often mix these up, and the difference matters when you want a loan or decide to leave. Our Sacco terms glossary explains the wider terms.

Feature Investment shares Sacco deposits
What you earn Dividends from the year’s surplus Interest
Can you withdraw? No, but you can transfer them to a willing member Only when you exit and have cleared all loans and guarantees
Loan security Cannot be used Can be used as security

Unaitas Sacco Loans

Unaitas lends against your savings and your ability to repay, not against your shares. You need to have operated your account for at least three months before borrowing. The table covers the main loan types published on the Sacco’s site; interest rates are not listed there, so ask the branch for the current rate and total cost in writing.

Loan Who it is for Term Key features and requirements
Personal loan Civil servants and staff of companies with an MOU with Unaitas Up to 96 months Unsecured limit of KSh 5 million; application form, bank and loan statements, latest three payslips
Mshahara loan Employees who channel salary through Unaitas, or private firms with an MOU and check-off Up to 72 months Amount as per qualification; application form, bank statement, latest three payslips
Biashara loan Business owners needing working capital or emergency cash Up to 3 years Secured or unsecured; daily, weekly or monthly repayments; ID, KRA PIN, business permits and records, bank statements
Other products Members with specific needs Varies Asset finance, mortgage, import duty financing, insurance premium financing, payroll advance, credit line, Kahawa Plus, Maono, Imarika and Jivunie development loans, project loans, bid bonds and guarantees

You can estimate monthly repayments with our Unaitas loan calculator or compare lenders with the other Sacco loan calculators.

Accepted loan security

  • Guarantors, including co-guarantorship within groups.
  • Sacco deposits.
  • Land, with a title deed.
  • Bank guarantees.
  • Vehicles that meet the Sacco’s year-of-manufacture rule.

You may hold loans from different categories at the same time if you meet each loan’s conditions. Clearing a loan early attracts no penalty and no interest for the remaining months. Lenders check your credit record, so check your CRB status before you apply.

How to Deposit and Withdraw With M-Pesa

Deposit through paybill 544700

  1. Open M-Pesa and choose Lipa na M-Pesa, then Paybill.

  4. Enter the amount and your M-Pesa PIN, then confirm.

Set up and use *493#

  1. Register for mobile banking at your branch. You’ll get a start PIN by SMS.
  2. Dial *493#, enter your ID number and the start PIN.
  3. Set and confirm your own secret PIN.
  4. To withdraw to M-Pesa, dial *493#, log in and choose option 4, then follow the prompts.

Unaitas for Kenyans Abroad

Members in the diaspora can open an account with an account opening form, certified copies of their ID and Kenyan passport, KRA PIN, a recent photo, a utility bill in their name, and the name and phone number of a relative in Kenya. The Sacco lists four ways to send money to the account:

  • Sawa Pay from the US, straight to paybill 544700.
  • Simba Pay from European countries, also to paybill 544700.
  • Wave from the US, UK and Canada, to the Sacco’s Co-operative Bank account.
  • WorldRemit, using the same Co-operative Bank account details.

Ask the Sacco for its Co-operative Bank account details directly by email rather than relying on numbers shared on social media.

Tips Before You Visit a Branch

  • Carry your original ID; branches will not process withdrawals or changes without it.
  • Call the branch line first if you are travelling far, especially for the three marketing offices.
  • Read the risks and rewards of investing in Saccos before you put large sums into shares, since shares cannot be withdrawn.
  • Compare branch networks with other Saccos, such as Hazina Sacco branches, if you move often.
