Updated 29 October 2026
The quickest way to raise money for medical bills in Kenya is to combine three things: claim everything SHA and any private cover will pay, then run an online fundraiser (such as M-Changa, which charges a 4.25% platform fee and nothing on M-Pesa donations) alongside a family harambee. Start by getting an itemised estimate from the hospital, so you know the gap you’re raising for. This guide covers each step, the real fees on an online fundraiser and the mistakes that slow donations.
Updated October 2026. Fundraising fees from M-Changa’s official fees page (mchanga.africa); SHA details from our SHA guides.

Step 1: Work Out the Real Gap
- Ask for an itemised quotation: procedure, theatre, ward days, drugs and the doctor’s fees.
- Confirm what SHA pays. Check the patient is registered and contributions are up to date (how to check SHA status), and that the hospital is contracted. For cancer, see the SHA cancer package limits.
- Add private cover: employer or individual medical insurance may pay the balance or the deposit.
- Subtract both from the bill. What’s left is your fundraising target.
Families often set a round target that’s far above the real gap, which puts donors off. A clear, itemised target builds trust.
Step 2: Set Up an Online Fundraiser
M-Changa is one of the most widely used platforms in Kenya, and lists medical bills as one of its main causes. You create a fundraiser, verify it with medical and hospital details plus treasurers, then share the link and paybill details.
What M-Changa charges
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Platform fee | 4.25% of donations (KSh42.50 on KSh1,000) |
| Reduced platform fee | 3.5% if the fundraiser raises KSh3,000,000 or more within 30 days, applied automatically |
| M-Pesa and mobile money donations | 0% processing fee |
| Visa, Mastercard and PayPal donations | 2.5% processing fee |
| Withdrawal to a Kenyan bank (EFT) | KSh550 per withdrawal below KSh500,000; free at KSh500,000 and above |
| Withdrawal to mobile money | Standard mobile money charges, shown before you confirm |
| International bank transfer | USD 25 per withdrawal |
| Thank-you SMS | 250 free, then KSh0.60 to KSh2 per SMS depending on donor numbers; automated SMS are free |
Worked example: if KSh200,000 comes in via M-Pesa, the platform fee at 4.25% is KSh8,500. Withdraw it to a bank account in one EFT and you pay KSh550, so about KSh191,000 reaches the hospital account.
Step 3: Raise Money for Medical Bills With a Harambee
- Name a small committee: a chair, treasurer and secretary who are not the patient’s spouse, so donors see accountability.
- Use one paybill or fundraiser link for everyone, including church and WhatsApp group contributions.
- Post updates: the amount raised, receipts paid to the hospital and the patient’s progress (with their consent).
- Pay the hospital directly wherever possible and share the receipt.
Step 4: Talk to the Hospital
Ask the billing office about deposits, payment plans and whether part of the bill can be paid after discharge. Keep every receipt and the final invoice for donors and for any insurance claim. For contacts, see SHA customer care and county offices if a claim is stuck.
Mistakes That Slow Donations
- No photo of the bill or hospital letter: donors want proof.
- Several different paybills and personal numbers, which looks disorganised and invites fraud.
- No updates after the first appeal; a short weekly update keeps people giving.
- Not thanking donors. M-Changa’s automated thank-you SMS are free.
Plan Ahead: Avoid the Next Fundraiser
A medical harambee is a sign the cover wasn’t enough. Compare plans in our guide to the best medical insurance cover in Kenya, and check which nearby hospitals take SHA in the SHA accredited hospitals search.
Other Ways to Raise Money for Medical Bills
Beyond a fundraiser and a harambee, ask your employer about staff welfare funds or salary advances, check whether your SACCO offers emergency loans, and ask your church or community group for a contribution. Some families raise money for medical bills by selling an asset; if you do, get a fair valuation first and avoid high-cost quick loans that can outlast the illness.
