Nairobi Expressway Toll Charges 2026: Full Rate Table

Updated 28 October 2026

Nairobi Expressway toll charges for a saloon car run from KSh170 to KSh500 per trip, excluding VAT, under the rates gazetted on 7 December 2023 (Gazette Notice No. 17419) and still linked as the current schedule on the operator’s site. The full Mlolongo to Westlands run costs KSh500 for a Class 3 car. Bigger vehicles pay 1.5, 4 or 5 times that, and motorbikes and tuk-tuks are not allowed on the road at all. Below is the full table by entry and exit, what each vehicle class pays and how to pay.

Updated October 2026. Rates are taken from the Kenya Gazette schedule published on nairobiexpressway.ke, Moja Expressway’s official site.

Nairobi Expressway Toll Charges at a Glance

  • Shortest trips: KSh170 (for example Syokimau to SGR, or Capital Centre to Haile Selassie).
  • Airport runs: JKIA to Haile Selassie (CBD) KSh330; JKIA to Westlands KSh410.
  • Full length: Mlolongo to Westlands KSh500.
  • Prices exclude VAT and the gazette allows the base rates to be adjusted for inflation (CPI) and the dollar exchange rate.

Many websites still show an older table that tops out at KSh330. That was the 2022 schedule (Gazette Notice No. 4537 of 2022), which the December 2023 notice expressly revoked. If you budget on the old numbers, you will under-pay your ETC account.

What Bigger Vehicles Pay

The gazette sets every other class as a multiple of the Class 3 fare:

Class Vehicle Multiplier Mlolongo to Westlands
Class 1 Two-wheeled motor vehicles Prohibited –
Class 2 Three-wheeled motor vehicles Prohibited –
Class 3 Light vehicles with two axles 1x KSh500
Class 4 Light vehicles with two axles and a high bonnet 1.5x KSh750
Class 5 Heavy vehicles with fewer than four axles 4x KSh2,000
Class 6 Heavy vehicles with four or more axles 5x KSh2,500

The Class 4 to 6 amounts in the last column are worked out by applying the gazetted multiplier to the KSh500 Class 3 fare, before VAT.

How to Pay Nairobi Expressway Toll Charges

Moja Expressway lists four ways to pay:

  1. ETC (electronic toll collection): apply online or at a service centre and have an on-board unit (OBU) fitted. The toll is deducted as you pass, with no stop. The FAQ says the minimum ETC toll points are 490.
  2. MTC card: a tap-and-go prepaid card collected at a service centre.
  3. Mobile money: press the voucher button at entry, then pay with mobile money at the exit using the voucher.
  4. Cash: press the voucher button at entry and pay cash at the exit.

To top up an ETC account, use the Nairobi Expressway app, dial *819#, use your web account, or pay cash at a service centre. You can check your balance the same ways, and the exit gate displays it as you pass.

Rules That Can Cost You More

  • Speed limit: 80km/h, with lower limits on some sections shown by signs.
  • No dropping off passengers, no parking unless the car has broken down, and no reversing or U-turns.
  • The emergency lane is for emergencies only. Littering attracts a fine from the relevant authorities.
  • Breakdown or emergency: call the rescue line on +254 111 039 888. Customer service is on +254 111 039 777.

Traffic offences on the Expressway are still traffic offences: see our guide on how to pay NTSA instant fines.

Are Nairobi Expressway Toll Charges Worth It?

For a commuter doing Syokimau to Westlands and back on a weekday, the gazetted saloon fare is KSh500 each way before VAT, so about KSh1,000 a day or roughly KSh22,000 for 22 working days. Whether it pays off depends on the time you save and the fuel you would burn in Mombasa Road traffic. If you drive the corridor daily, check that your cover suits the extra mileage with our car insurance premium estimator.

More toll roads are coming. The Treasury is lining up toll deals for the Nairobi Southern and Mombasa Northern bypasses, and the government wants a private investor to finish and toll the James Gichuru-Rironi road. For licences, inspection and other vehicle services, see NTSA services in one place.

Planning Around Nairobi Expressway Toll Charges

Three habits keep Nairobi Expressway toll charges predictable. First, decide your usual entry and exit, because the fare depends on both: Syokimau to Westlands (KSh500) costs more than JKIA to Westlands (KSh410). Second, if you use the road more than a few times a week, an ETC tag or MTC card is quicker than queuing for a voucher. Third, watch for notices from Moja Expressway, because the gazette allows Nairobi Expressway toll charges to be adjusted for inflation and the exchange rate.
