Updated 29 October 2026
Updated October 2026. Money market fund vs savings account in Kenya: a money market fund (MMF) has recently paid roughly three times what the average bank savings account pays, but a savings account is protected by deposit insurance up to KSh 500,000 and an MMF is not. CBK’s key rates board put the average savings rate at 3.53% for September 2026, while large MMFs were publishing yields of about 10.3% in October 2026. Which one suits you depends on how fast you need the money and how much risk you can carry.

Why MMFs pay more than savings accounts
An MMF pools investors’ money and buys short-term instruments such as Treasury bills, fixed deposits and commercial paper. Those instruments pay close to market rates: the 91-day Treasury bill was 8.748% on 26 October 2026 and the Central Bank Rate was 8.75%. After the manager’s fee, the fund passes the rest to you. A bank, by contrast, sets its own savings rate and keeps the difference between that and what it earns by lending. That is why the CBK average savings rate (3.53%) sits so far below MMF yields.
MMFs are now big business. The CMA’s quarterly report counted 59 money market funds holding KSh 459.87 billion at 30 June 2026. You can see every fund, its size and its latest published yield on our list of all CMA-approved money market funds.
What you give up in an MMF
The trade-off is protection. KDIC’s own page lists “mutual funds (including money market funds)” and “unit trusts” among products it does not insure. If a bank fails and is put into liquidation, KDIC pays each depositor up to KSh 500,000. If an MMF runs into trouble, there is no equivalent payout; you rely on the fund’s assets, its custodian and the CMA rules that keep investors’ money separate from the manager’s.
MMF yields also change. They follow Treasury bill and deposit rates, so when CBK cuts rates, MMF yields tend to fall. A savings account rate can change too, but it is usually more stable, just lower.
Which should you choose?
- Emergency fund you might need today: keep at least part in a savings or current account for same-day access, and the rest in an MMF.
- Savings goal in 3 to 12 months (school fees, rent deposit, a car): an MMF usually earns noticeably more.
- Large balances above KSh 500,000 in one bank: remember only the first KSh 500,000 is insured, so spreading money across banks or into an MMF changes your risk, not just your return.
- Money you won’t touch for over a year: compare Treasury bills and bonds too, see our MMF vs Treasury bills guide.
Worked example: KSh 100,000 for a year
Using the published figures above and ignoring top-ups: at 3.53% a year, KSh 100,000 earns about KSh 3,530 before tax, or about KSh 3,000 after 15% withholding tax. At a 10.3% effective yield, the same money earns about KSh 10,300 before tax, or about KSh 8,755 after tax. That is an illustration, not a forecast; MMF yields can fall during the year. Frequently asked questions
Is a money market fund safer than a savings account in Kenya?
No. A savings account at a KDIC member bank is insured up to KSh 500,000 per depositor; a money market fund is not insured, although it is regulated by the CMA and holds low-risk assets.
How much does a savings account pay in Kenya?
The Central Bank of Kenya reported an average savings rate of 3.53% for September 2026. Individual banks may pay more or less.
Is MMF interest taxed?
Yes. Residents pay 15% withholding tax on MMF interest, the same rate as on bank interest.
Can I lose money in a money market fund?
Losses are rare because MMFs hold short-term, low-risk assets, but they are possible, and there is no deposit insurance.
