Why prices went up

EPRA said the average landed cost of imported petroleum products rose between August and September: up 11.81% for super petrol, 11.32% for diesel and 9.41% for kerosene. No price stabilisation was applied in this cycle, so the full cost increase is passed on at the pump.

What it means for households and businesses

Kerosene sees the biggest jump, at almost Sh28.50 a litre, which hits low-income households that rely on it for cooking and lighting. The higher diesel price is likely to raise transport, matatu and logistics costs, and those usually feed into food and goods prices in the following weeks. The 8% VAT rate on fuel is still under review. See our explainer on the fuel VAT extension in the tax bill, and the background to this review in Murban crude’s rise ahead of EPRA’s October review.

The new prices take effect at midnight and run until November 14, 2026.
