Starting legally in Kenya usually means stacking a few registrations in order. Exact licences depend on your sector (food, transport, clinics and schools have extra regulators).

Core checklist

  1. Choose a structure: business name or limited company.
  2. Register with BRS on eCitizen and keep the certificate.
  3. Get KRA PINs for the owners and for the business where required; enrol for VAT or turnover tax if you meet the thresholds.
  4. County single business permit for the premises and activity.
  5. NSSF and SHA (formerly NHIF pathways) when you hire staff.
  6. Sector licences (KEBS, NTSA, CA, KMPDC, etc.) if your activity is regulated.
  7. Bank account in the business name with resolution and IDs.

Detailed walks: business name, limited company, KRA PIN.
