Rudishiwa is Airtel Money’s cashback programme. The name comes from the Swahili for being given something back. Instead of keeping the whole fee you pay on certain transactions, Airtel returns part or all of it to you as airtime. For people who withdraw cash or pay bills often, that can make a real difference to monthly costs. This guide explains how Rudishiwa started, which transactions qualify, how Smarta Bundles fit in and how to decide whether it actually saves you money.

How Rudishiwa Works

When you make a qualifying transaction on Airtel Money, you pay the normal fee first. Shortly afterwards, Airtel credits airtime back to your line, worth a share of the fee you paid. You can then use that airtime for calls, SMS or to buy bundles. The money does not come back to your wallet as cash. It comes back as airtime, so its value depends on whether you actually use airtime.

How the Programme Has Grown

Stage What was added
2023 Rudishiwa launched on agent withdrawals. The withdrawal fee came back as airtime.
2024 Extended to paybill payments, returning 50% of the transaction fee as airtime.
Smarta Bundles Airtel says customers on weekly Smarta Bundles get 100% of the fee back as airtime on agent withdrawals, paybill payments and bank to own wallet transfers.

Airtel adjusts its offers from time to time, so treat these as how the programme has been described rather than a permanent promise. Check the current terms on *334# or with Airtel customer care before relying on a particular rebate.

Example: Paying KPLC Tokens

Say you buy electricity tokens through the KPLC paybill on Airtel Money. You pay the normal paybill fee shown on screen. Under the paybill version of Rudishiwa, a share of that fee returns as airtime. If you are on a qualifying Smarta Bundle, the full fee may come back. Either way, you receive your tokens as normal, and the airtime arrives separately by SMS.

Which Transactions Usually Qualify

  • Withdrawing cash at an Airtel Money agent.
  • Paying paybills such as utilities, TV subscriptions and school fees.
  • Moving money from your bank to your own Airtel Money wallet, for Smarta Bundle users.

Sending money from one Airtel Money user to another is already free, so there is no fee to return on those transfers.

Does Rudishiwa Make Airtel Cheaper Than M-Pesa?

It depends on how you use mobile money. Airtel to Airtel transfers are free, and Rudishiwa returns some or all of the fee on withdrawals and bills. If you use the returned airtime, your effective cost can be lower than on M-Pesa for the same transactions. If you rarely use airtime, because you rely on data bundles or WhatsApp calls, the cashback is worth less to you. Compare the base fees in our Airtel Money charges guide with M-Pesa withdrawal charges, then factor in the airtime you would actually use.

How to Get the Most From Rudishiwa

  1. Check the current offer on *334# before your next withdrawal or bill payment.
  2. Use the airtime. Convert it into a bundle you need so it does not sit unused.
  3. Consider Smarta Bundles if you already buy weekly bundles and also pay bills or withdraw often.
  4. Pay bills directly instead of withdrawing cash and paying in person, which costs more overall.
  5. Keep your confirmation messages so you can follow up if expected airtime does not arrive.

A Simple Way to Measure the Savings

For one month, note every Airtel Money withdrawal and bill payment you make, the fee you paid and the airtime credited back. At the end of the month, add up the fees and subtract the airtime you actually used. That figure is your real cost. Do the same exercise for M-Pesa if you use both. Many households find that splitting their activity, for example using Airtel Money for bills and M-Pesa for paying traders, gives them the lowest total cost.

What to Do If the Airtime Does Not Arrive

Wait a little, because credits can take a short time. Check your airtime balance. If nothing arrives, contact Airtel customer care with the transaction ID from your Airtel Money confirmation message, and ask whether that transaction qualified under the current terms.
