Largest and smallest wards by voters
On the 2022 register, the three biggest wards by registered voters were Market Milimani in Kisumu Central (29,278), Kajulu in Kisumu East (26,717), Railways in Kisumu Central (25,365). The smallest were South West Nyakach in Nyakach (10,003), East Kano/Wawidhi in Nyando (10,146), Miwani in Muhoroni (10,846). The average ward had about 17,336 registered voters. Kisumu Central constituency holds about 21 percent of the county’s voters, the largest share of any constituency.
Ward sizes differ because boundaries were drawn with population, geography and community interests in mind, not just voter numbers. Sparsely populated areas often have wards that cover a large area but hold fewer voters.
What a county assembly ward does
A ward is the smallest electoral unit in Kenya’s devolved system. Voters in each ward elect one MCA every five years at the General Election. The MCA represents the ward in the Kisumu County Assembly, where members pass county laws, approve the county budget and oversee the work of the Governor and the county executive. The assembly also has nominated members who fill the gender and special interest seats.
Wards also matter outside elections. Many county programmes are planned and shared out ward by ward, including ward development funds, bursaries for secondary and college students, and projects such as feeder roads, water points and health centres. If you apply for a county bursary, the form will usually ask for your ward, and a ward committee may vet the application. Each ward also has a county ward administrator who coordinates county services there.
How to find which ward you are in
- Check your voter registration. If you are a registered voter, send your ID number by SMS to 70000 or use the voter verification service on the IEBC website. The reply shows your county, constituency, ward and polling centre.
- Ask your chief or ward administrator. They can confirm boundaries, especially if you live near the line between two wards.
- Use the tables above. If you know the area you live in, match it to the ward and constituency listed.
When you fill in a government or county form, use the ward spelling on the IEBC list, since that is what voter and candidate records use.
Main towns and the wards around them
Kisumu city, the county headquarters, falls mainly in Kisumu Central constituency, whose six wards include Market Milimani, Kondele, Railways, Migosi, Shaurimoyo Kaloleni and Nyalenda B. Market Milimani was the largest ward in the county by registered voters in 2022. Kisumu East takes in Kajulu, Manyatta ‘B’, Nyalenda ‘A’ and the Kolwa wards on the city’s eastern side. Ahero, the rice-growing town on the Nairobi to Kisumu road, is its own ward in Nyando constituency, while Muhoroni constituency covers the sugar zone through Chemelil, Muhoroni/Koru and Miwani wards. Seme and Kisumu West stretch along the lake to the west of the city.
